The Blindness of Evil: Why Satan Helped Bring About His Own Defeat
There is a popular idea in preaching that Satan is the most intelligent being God ever created, second only to God Himself. It sounds dramatic. It sounds weighty. It is also not found anywhere in Scripture.
The Bible never assigns intelligence rankings to angels. It never says Satan is brilliant, superior, or unmatched in intellect. What it does say is that his wisdom is corrupted, his pride is blinding, and his judgment is fatally flawed. And nowhere is that more evident than at the Cross.
Paul states the matter plainly. Speaking of the crucifixion, he writes, “Which none of the princes of this world knew. For had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.” I Corinthians 2:8. That is not speculation. That is revelation. If Satan and the powers of darkness had understood what God was doing, they would not have participated in the very act that destroyed their dominion.
This is not the behavior of a super intellect. It is the behavior of a being whose wisdom has been bent inward until it becomes self destructive.
Ezekiel describes the fall of the anointed cherub in terms that explain this blindness. “Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty. Thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness.” Ezekiel 28:17. Pride does not sharpen the mind. Pride warps it. Pride blinds. Pride turns cunning into folly.
Scripture reinforces this portrait by describing Satan in moral and strategic terms rather than intellectual ones.
“Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made.” Genesis 3:1.
“But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.” 2 Corinthians 11:3.
“Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” Ephesians 6:11.
“For the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.” Revelation 12:10.
None of these traits require superior intelligence. They require corruption, pride, and malice. They describe a being whose wisdom has been twisted, not exalted.
That corrupted wisdom shows up throughout Scripture. Satan tempts Eve, and God promises a Seed who will crush him. He corrupts humanity, and God sends the Flood. He opposes Israel, and God preserves a remnant. He enters Judas, and triggers the Cross that destroys him. Every move he makes backfires. Every scheme collapses under the weight of God’s sovereignty.
The Cross is the clearest example. Satan understood that the Messiah would reign. He understood that the Messiah would rule the nations. He did not understand that the Messiah would conquer through suffering, die as a substitute, rise in victory, and ascend in triumph. He misread the mission. He acted on incomplete information. And he walked straight into his own defeat.
Jesus said, “Now shall the prince of this world be cast out.” John 12:31. Paul wrote that Christ “spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.” Colossians 2:15. Hebrews declares that “through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil.” Hebrews 2:14. Revelation announces that “the accuser of our brethren is cast down.” Revelation 12:10.
All four witnesses agree. Satan’s attempt to kill Christ is the act that kills Satan’s dominion.
This is not superior intelligence. This is blindness.
The Bible does not present Satan as brilliant. It presents him as proud, cunning, experienced, and corrupt. His wisdom is not exalted. It is twisted. And twisted wisdom always destroys itself.
The Cross is the moment where that truth stands in full light. Satan did not understand it. He did not foresee it. He did not grasp the plan of God. And in his arrogance, he participated in the one act that guaranteed his own defeat.
That is the biblical portrait. Not a super intellect. Not a near equal to God. Just a fallen being whose pride blinds him, whose wisdom is corrupted, and whose greatest act of opposition became the instrument of his undoing.
