The Bride and the Redeemed

The Bride and the Redeemed: Salvation, Membership, and the Righteousness of Christ

I asked a long‑time friend, a pastor I have known for years, a simple question. I asked whether saved people who are children of God, but who are not members of a local New Testament church, would be part of the Bride of Christ when the rapture occurs. His answer was no. I did not press him for Scripture. I was too taken aback to speak.

The claim itself carries consequences that Scripture does not support. It implies that membership in a local assembly is a condition for inclusion in the Bride. It implies that salvation alone is not sufficient. It implies that the redeemed who are outside a local church will be excluded from the righteousness Christ provides to every child of God. This is not the teaching of Scripture. It is a form of covenant salvation, where belonging to an earthly institution becomes the ground of acceptance before God. The Bible does not teach this.

Scripture teaches that the redeemed are washed, justified, and clothed in righteousness because of Christ alone. Revelation 19:7–8 says, “Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him. For the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready. And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white. For the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.” The righteousness is granted. It is not earned. It is not conferred by membership. It is given to saints, to the redeemed, to those washed in His blood.

The Bride is not assembled on earth. She is assembled in glory. Paul writes in Ephesians 5:25–27, “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it. That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word. That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing. But that it should be holy and without blemish.” The presentation is future. The cleansing is His work. The glory is His doing. The Bride is the redeemed body Christ presents to Himself. It is not the sum of earthly membership rolls.

Salvation is the ground of inclusion. Romans 8:16–17 says, “The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God. And if children, then heirs. Heirs of God, and joint heirs with Christ.” The qualification is sonship. The qualification is redemption. The qualification is the witness of the Spirit. Membership in a local assembly is obedience. It is fellowship. It is service. It is not the basis of heirship.

To claim that a saved person who never joined a local church would not be part of the Bride is to create a category Scripture never creates. It would exclude believers who lived in regions without churches. It would exclude persecuted believers who could not gather. It would exclude believers saved on their deathbeds. It would exclude believers in eras where no functioning assembly existed. Scripture never suggests such exclusions.

Revelation 19:8 says, “And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white. For the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.” The righteousness is granted. It is not earned. It is not conferred by membership. It is given to saints, to the redeemed, to those washed in His blood. To claim that only members of a local assembly receive this garment is to deny the granting of righteousness to the redeemed. It is to make membership the condition of clothing. It is to replace grace with covenant. Scripture does not teach this.

The redeemed are sealed. Ephesians 1:13 says, “In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. In whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise.” The seal is upon believers. The seal is not upon members only. The seal is the Spirit, not the clerk’s record.

The redeemed are kept. Jude 1 says, “Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ, and called.” Preservation is in Christ. Sanctification is by the Father. Calling is by the Spirit. None of these are tied to earthly membership.

The redeemed are the Bride. Revelation 21:9 says, “Come hither. I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb’s wife.” What John sees is the redeemed in glory, the totality of the saved, the perfected assembly of the saints. It is not a registry of earthly congregations. It is the company of the washed, the justified, the sanctified, the glorified.

To make local church membership the condition for inclusion in the Bride is to make membership a salvific category. It is to make the local assembly the gate to glory. It is to make the clerk’s record the book of life. It is to replace grace with covenant salvation. It is to deny the righteousness granted to every child of God.

The Bride is the redeemed. The righteousness is granted. The garments are given. The presentation is Christ’s work. The ground is salvation. The seal is the Spirit. The hope is grace.

Anything that excludes the redeemed from the Bride is not Scripture. It is system. It is tradition. It is covenant theology in Baptist clothing. It is not the teaching of the Word of God.
