Genesis 16

For this Hagar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children. (Gal 4:25 KJV)
God has now made promises to Abraham about those that would be his descendants, that they would have certain blessings. Now, okay, Sarai is way past the time of child bearing and this poses a little problem. It seems that they must come up with their own way of fulfilling this promise; God needs a little help here, and the answer, it seems, is the bond woman. Well, we all have a problem in that sin has separated us from God and, unfortunately, all too many people, like Abraham and Sarai long ago, once again turn to the bond woman. The law shows what we are, sinners, it cannot save, it only condemns because the law is righteous, Holy and good; and we are neither. Trying to come to God by the law, in any way, only gets us condemned.
Paul would also write in Galatians: “I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.” (Galatians 1:6-9) The just shall live by faith; faith in the finished work of Christ.

But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God. (Rom 2:29)
Circumcision was given to Abraham as a sign of the covenant that God makes with Abraham. It has nothing to do with personal salvation, or anyone’s relationship with God. Circumcision and anyone’s relationship to Abraham does not gain favor with God.
Likewise, as pertaining to the ordinances in this, the Church Age, baptism and the Lord’s Supper does not save. Things do not save, The Lord Jesus, and faith in His finished work on the cross, does.

Critics have attacked certain portions of the Old Testament because, in their estimation, it just seems too incredible, that the events simply could not have happened. Another words, they don’t believe in anything miraculous. As such, they have come up with what has been called the Redaction Theory; that is, this is the belief that, those who have copied the Bible down through the ages, in order to make the Bible sound more miraculous, have added stories that speaks of things that cannot be explained by natural means.. But many of these things our Lord, when He walked among us, verified that these events actually happened.
The flood:
“For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.” (Mat 24:38,39)
Sodom and Gomorrah, that we have here:
“Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment, than for that city.” (Mat 10:15) And Lot’s wife?: “Remember Lot’s wife.” (Luke 17:32)
Moses and the serpent:
“And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:“ (John 3:14)
Jonah:
“For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.” (Mat 12:40)
So, to attack the Old Testament and the events that happen in it, you, to put it bluntly, must make our Lord a liar, because if He is who He says, He knows first hand about these events.

This will be good when witnessing to some who say the OT is just stories/fables. Thank you for the "ammunition ".

“Judge not, that ye be not judged.” (Matthew 7:1) While there is so much that could be discussed here: Lot selling out his daughters; their hesitation to leave the city, to the point the angels had to force them out; Lot’s wife looking back; and then this shameful act by lot (in getting drunk) and his daughters. But what strikes me is the men of the city saying of Lot (in the KJV) “…will needs be a judge…” (verse 9). The verse I gave here, Matthew 7:1 is the world’s favorite verse of the Bible. If they that be of the world knows anything in the Bible, it is this verse. It is this verse that they will use against anyone who takes a stand against what is in opposition to sound Biblical morality and principals. In other words it is, as it were, “We will teach whatever nonsense to your children and grandchildren that we want, fill the airways with whatever filth we please, and you be good little Christians and hold your peace, after all: Judge not, that ye be not judged!”
America does not have some sort of immunity from the judgement of God folks!
“Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.” (Galatians 6:7). “Man” in this verse can be substituted by anything you please (group, company, organization, nation, etc.)

Genesis 20

Abraham was known for his faith, he is said to be the father of faith. David was known for his love, and he had the best possible testimonial: God Himself “But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the LORD hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee.“ (1Samuel 13:14) His son, Solomon, was given great wisdom. However, Abraham’s great faith did not keep him from these “she’s my sister” episodes; David’s love did not keep him from doing what he did, and Solomon, with his God given wisdom, as we know, was lead into idolatry. So, what is the answer? The psalmist said:
“Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” (Psa 119:11) Sin starts with a thought, keeping the mind on spiritual matters is a guard against sin.

Let us look now at this household. We have Abraham, a man of faith, we have Sarah the free woman, her son, the son of promise. Then we have Hagar, the bond woman and her son born naturally, by the flesh, as it were. Now, let us make no mistake here: these are all real people, and everything that happens here really happened to real people. But for us: “Now all these things happened unto them for examples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.”
(1Cointhians 10:11.) The key verse here is verse 10: “Wherefore she said unto Abraham, Cast out this bondwoman and her son: for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, even with Isaac.” Galatians chapter four is worth a careful study here. You can’t climb up to God by natural means, symbolized by Hagar and her son. You reach God by trusting and believing in what He has done by HIS Son of promise: the Lord Jesus.

As one approaches this passage, we must keep in mind that God knows the end from the beginning. Some Bible versions renders what Abraham was to do "sacrifice." while other versions renders it "offer." That is what the Lord commanded Abraham to do: to OFFER and this is what Abraham did. God did not command Abraham to kill his son.By his conversation to his servants Abraham knew that both him and the boy would return. By His conversation with Isaac, Abraham knew that God would provide a suitable sacrifice. Abraham knew that, because of the promises God had made concerning this son, that, even if he died, God would raise him to life. This would seem to be the only possible interpretation here. God did indeed provide a sacrifice here, and He provided a suitable sacrifice for our sins by His own Son. We cannot pay for our sins: the debt is too big. What we could not do, God did Himself. We cannot save ourselves by our own little "sacrifices," salvation comes by trusting in what the Lord Jesus did for us.

In spite of all of God's promises that Abraham had been given the land in which he was living, in the end he never actually owned any place to live in, he only had a burial plot. It makes me, for one, to wonder; what do we really own down here? We know that everything that we see here will melt with fervent heat (II Peter 3:10). If you do not like what man is doing to this planet, wait till you see what its Creator does to it (Revelation chapters 6-19). When sin entered the world, it became a sin-cursed world, and is no place for the redeemed. Hebrews 11:10 Says of Abraham, " For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God."

Romans 15:4 tells us that all that was written before was written for our instruction. Now we have here another beautiful Old Testament story that speaks a great truth to us. Here we have a very faithful servant commissioned by the father of the promised son to find a bride for that son. Today we have the Father of the promised Son using faithful servants to gather a bride for that Son. That bride is His Church. Rebecca had the right to go or to refuse, the same is true today.
