The effects of t.v. in our homes

Sherrie listed some GREAT stations that have informative and educational shows and some shows that uplift or entertain. I agree with her and a few others on this. T.V. is not the problem.... the shows people watch are the problem.

One man admitted that he was drawn to the scantily clad women. We don't watch those shows in our home. In fact, my husband will turn the channel when the commercials come on if there is any clothing or situation that is not appropriate. Even my 8 year old has learned to do that!

Someone said they can control what they view on the internet and I say 'Wrong!' Another older lady and I mentioned earlier that we'd both somehow gotten porn type pop ups with VERY filthy pictures while innocently looking for something online. Be assured that I have never sought out filth online... it comes by email and pop-ups, ads and headers! A prayer board I visited on an invitation the other day had an ad at the top for Playboy. Another Christian board had an ad for 'dating' which included boy seeking boy ads.

T.V., in and of itself, is not the problem. Satan is the problem.... However, if you are unable to control your lust and sinful thoughts, get rid of the t.v. and internet!

I do not for one second disagree with the statement you said, but one thing needs to be taken into considerstion. We can train our children, but children being subject to the foolishness of youth can get themselves into all kinds of trouble. Also is the problem that children will do in excess what their parents do in moderation. I have seen this time and time again. I feel sometimes we take a pot shot at folks by saying, "if you are unable to control your lust and sinful thoughts," etc. we make it look like t.v. is only for the very spiritual. I think t.v. has more negatives than positives and the children are the ones at stake. We do not always get rid of questionable things because of our weakness, but because of the others who are weak, namely, my children. All things are lawful, but not all things are expedient. I cannot selfishly claim my rights, I must yieild for NUMBER ONE

I'm just "finding" this topic, so I figured I'd jump in. We have a TV in the living room. All 3 computers are in the office. My kids only have their own programs-Jump Start & Reader Rabbit-as well as shortcuts to the websites-Nick Jr, Big Idea, Disney-that they go to on the desktop. When they are on the computer, either dh or I is there with them. On TV they watch, Nickeloden, Disney, Cartoon Network, and Nogin.
We have a satelite which includes the basic pack with HBO for Boxing. We also have a VCR and DVD player. We have EVERY Veggie Tale movie, alot of Disney movies, and some other kids movies like Stuart Little.
When my kids were toddlers, I saw nothing wrong with putting them in front of the TV for 30 minutes while I scrubbed the toilets, bathrooms,mopped the floor-something that involved chemicals that I didn't want them around due to not understanding how harmful they were.
As my children got older and now, they still watch certain programs on TV, as well as reading, doing puzzles, playing in their rooms, and helping more with household things.
Dh and I enjoy watching some of the programs with them too.
My husband and I enjoy watching TV at night after the kids go to bed. We only have a few shows that we REALLY like, if it's not one of the nights that they are on, we have recorded cooking shows, or history channel shows, or movies that we watch then. Or sometimes we do a crossword puzzle together, a puzzle, or just go read in bed for a while.

I'm on the other end of the spectrum than most who post here. I work for the local cable co that provides basic and digital services as well as high speed internet access.

We have 4 tv's in the house. Talk about convenience. We watch the Rugrats, ESPN, Baseball right now (c'mon Braves), HGTV, News, News, TBN, The Discovery channels, TWC. The boys and I like to watch, Ask This Old House and New Yankee Worshop. I grew up watching tv so much, my parents had to put a time limit on me each day. I don't have to do that with mine.

When I come home from work, I usually find them outside playing basketball, baseball or trying to jump a garbage can with their bikes. Frankly, this summer they have not had time to watch much tv. When school starts, it will be even harder to watch. We try not to turn the tv on until supper's over and all the homework is done. Both love to read and have excelled in the summer reading program this year.

I agree the tv can be a very powerful influence in creating negativity in the home. I don't believe that is the case for us. I talk to cable customers everyday who say they can't live without their tv and will often pay for cable, putting off other necessities. If you have been able to get rid of your tv's and live without them, I commend you. I for one would hate to miss my local forecast on the 8's of the hour.

We have all the Bibleman videos, Donut Man (Christian), Veggie Tales, Steve Green's children's videos, My First Hymnal, Brentwood Kids (Christian), McGee and Me (Christian), Parables of Peter Rabbit, etc....... and some non-Christian videos like all the Winnie the Pooh's, some Little Bear, Kipper, and some Disney movies. Each night, before bed, Nick watches a Bibleman. His favorite is "Jesus my Savior" and his next favorite is "Six Lies of the Fibbler".

I send Christian videos to our grandchildren as gifts. The girls are not being raised in a Christian home and it's one way I can share Jesus with them! I also give Christian videos as birthday presents when Nick is invited. Every little boy enjoys Bibleman!

When my children were young, we decided to get rid of our TV and so we did not have one for 7 years. However, one problem we faced was that our children still knew all the TV shows from friends and they were glued to it whenever they were in the presence of a television. Their friends did not want to have them over, because all they wanted to do was view television.

After seven years we decided to have a TV again and try to control its content. We have a TV Guardian and for those who watch TV I would highly recommend it. While we tried not having a TV and having one and controlling it, the second option seemed to work out better for us.

We do not have cable or satalite, but there is plenty of viewing in the local channels and much even there that is not fit to watch. Our goal is to use TV rather then letting it use us.
