I don't like separating movies as a separate issue from all other forms of entertainment.

Any Biblical arguments I've heard against going to shows, or going to the video store, can be applied to any form of entertainment.

I think for my grandparents, and parents, the activities and common perception of teens being immoral at the drive in caters to the idea that going to see a show is bad.

However, the drive-in in my area caters to families, and I've never once seen any suspicious activity there, or groups of teens acting up.

I do respect those who don't go to the theater though, it's a good choice to make. We can't afford bringing our family to the theater, but the drive in has always been an affordable, friendly place to go for us.

And we get the option of watching a second movie, or going home. 2 for less than the price of 1.

What about the personal life styles of most of the actors/actresses?

Most of them have been involved in illicit sex and/or been married several times.

Then there's the drug and/or booze that most of them consume.

When a person either goes to a theater or rents/buys a video of a movie, his/her money is going to pay these people.

The problem with that argument is that it can also be used for groceries, tools, restaurants, cars, and pretty much everything else.

So you've provided that they are simply under the condemnation of the rest of mankind. Nothing new here.

It depends on the movie. I pretty much abstain from most movie and television watching, because you cannot find a movie that does not promote ungodly filth nearly every five minutes. Most dramas have at least one rape scene. Most comedies involve sex, nudity, crass jokes. Sodomite relationships are depicted (and glorified) in nearly every movie and TV show. Even movies that don't have a lot of swearing or sex still show men and women in immodest dress.

Despite the CCM, I like the movies done by Sherwood Pictures. They are clean, have a solid Christian message, they are quality films in production and acting.

WHY?????

Why spend big bucks when you can wait a few years and rent it for free from the public library????

Seems like a waist of money for a few moments mental distraction
Why buy your wife a dozen roses? They're just going to die. Why wash your car? It's just going to get dirty again. When I go to the theater, it's not necessarily for the movie (although obviously I only go see things that I want to see), it's a date with my wife away from the kids. Normally the movie is the "nightcap" of the night, after dinner and miniature golf or something like that. My point is, it's not a waste of money.
Here is a basic test for any situation.

Would you be embarrassed if the Lord appeared by your side and started a personal conversation with you if you are .......

I can agree with this. I think this is a good test of anything.

Come to think of it, maybe here on the board people should start to think as they type some responses "what if Jesus asked me what I am saying and why?" "Lord, I'm about to put someone in their place." Or, even better (guilty myself), "Lord, I'm about to make someone online look stupid."

Buying my wife flowers (we have a number of rose bushes already) is an expression of my love for her.

Do you love the movies as you love your wife? I know that is silly, but it is your example above. :)

Washing the car is keeping that which the Lord allowed into my life to not be "evil spoken of" by the unregenerate? (It also keeps My Bride from griping about getting dirty when she gets in)

Is there not enough areas in which our good is evil spoken of already?

I am not about to be critical of the dating practices between you and your wife.

However, I have yet to meet a wife who would not much rather spend the money on shoes.

Try this for a date night:

Rather than having the shoe salesman attend to her, you do it.

Example: She expresses an interest in a certain pair of shoes. You tell the sales person what you want. Then guide the wife to a chair. Gently remove one shoe and massage that foot, then do the same with the other foot.

When the salesman arrives, you take the shoe box from him, and gently place them on your wife's feet.

I will guarantee the night will be far more enjoyable and intimate than going to the movies. (and can also be less expensive because the shoes don't last a little over an hour)

There are so many other ways in which a date time with the wife can be focused upon her and her alone.

Beside all that, what real benefit does the movies hold?

Certainly, there are some great movies - Personally I think some like "Amazing Grace" were done very well and present a wholesome message.

But again, why not wait and rent them - have it for a family time?

Not only can you stop and discuss the message(s) of the movie as a family, but you can develop discernment with the family toward all types of media, philosophy and what is appropriate deportment.

These discussions are critical in not only child development, but in the family understanding and relating to each other in a reliable way.

Man of Steel came out this weekend. Yes I want to see it, and I do like movies as long as they are appropriate. However I do not like it when Churches try and make a Bible lesson out of Hollywood. The Bible is the authority not movies! The Bible has the power to change lives, not movies! Don't get me wrong I am not some Plymouth Brethren or Mennonite that thinks all movie theaters are too worldly to be at. Movies become sin if they come before God. We need to be BALANCED and not on the extreme. Many IFB are on the extreme that all movie theaters and movies are too worldly, and many evangelicals are on the other extreme of letting the world get into their thinking and into the church. Both views are unbiblical. Christians are in the world just not of it (Jn 17:15-19) and are the redemptive force in the culture. In order to be the redemptive force we cannot just SEPARATE from everything, nor can we let the ocean get into the ship, for the church is a ship in the ocean (the world) and we are to be out rescuing sinners from death.

If a church wants to use a wicked movie as an example of say how bad the world has become, why not?

There aren't many movies you can watch today without committing sin. Most of these movies are created by disgusting directors, depraved actors with a God hating agenda.

I don't see how you can be too extreme in thinking that the theaters are too worldly. I think saying that someone has too high of a standard with regards to the depravity of Hollywood, is just an excuse to watch worldly movies.
