I don't know, but I will be interested in reading your thoughts on it, I guess I never thought about it before.

Doesn't Paul say somewhere? It is because there will be no faith or hope in eternity, but charity will live forever.

There have been a number iof hymns written about this, at least!

Without love nothing you do matters. It is done for selfish reasons and not out of love. If we do good onto other and don't love them but do it for recognition, we do it in vain. The same goes for any ministry we do "for the Lord". If we don't do it because we love Him, we do it in vain.

Because when we are glorified, faith becomes sight and hope becomes reality. Personally, I am more mystified, not the love is greater, but that hope and faith will still have a place in the eternal state.

charity

Let a man have what he will and do what he will, it signifies nothing without charity. This surely implies that charity is the great thing, and that everything that does not have charity in some way contained or implied in it is nothing, and that this charity is the life and soul of all religion, without which all things that wear the name of "virtues" are empty and vain.

I find nothing wrong in any of the above, but let me simply add another dimension: faith and hope are personal things. Love is caring for others over and above one's personal self.

Not that any of the others are wrong...hope and faith will both be fulfilled later, but love will only grow and continue.

In the same chapter that you find the line you quoted, you will also find your answer.

Good replies.

Just off the top of my head, I would have to say that Jesus said, when asked, that the greatest commandment was to love God and to love your neighbor.

My thoughts

Thanks for all those replies.

For the record, here is what I came up with-

Love is greater than faith and hope because-

1. Faith and hope are temporal, love is eternal- 2 Corinthians 5:7; Romans 8:24,25; 1 Corinthians 13:8

2. Faith and hope do not fulfill the law, love does- Romans 13:8-10

3. Faith and hope cannot normally be seen, love can- Galatians 5:6;
1 John 3:17,18

4. Faith and hope are not characteristics of God, love is- 1 John 4:8,16

1Cor. 13

Christ tells us in Jn.13:35: I give you a new commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. This doesn't just mean fellow Christians, it means everyone including your enemies. We are to love everyone just as Christ loved us
