The Judgment of God

We all know its here, but I wonder sometimes if God not only allows events like last night, but invents them to bring about judgment on a people that refuses to repent from sin and turn to him! Perhaps such events will wake people up to the reality of Hell and were they are headed, but I doubt it. I thought I had read something about this in a way of the master minute devotional but I cant remember all the details. Opinions?

I brought up this topic not long ago.

While God is always directly responsible for disasters that occur to a city (Amos 3:6), we do not always know the reason for such calamity. I would grant though, that if we suffered national disaster and the end of our nation, then that would indicate judgment it would seem given the bible (Proverbs 28:1-2) (Proverbs 14:34) (Psalms 9:17). However, we have not had such happen, and thus we must be careful about calling this a judgment from God.

The bible has foils for thinking that all calamity is judgment. For instance, why were the Israelite slaves in Egypt at all? For what were they being punished for?

I tend to see God's judgment as being a bit more personal, aimed at individuals for a specific reason. Allowing, or as you are saying, causing a crazy person to randomly gun down people doesn't seem like a God-inspired kind of thing. Seems more like He's allowing Satan to operate in our world.

InTheLight, the problem is that the bible seems to indicate the inverse principle of what you said.

God uses evil, crazy rulers like Sennacherib or Nebuchadnezzar quite a bit to inflict judgment on others at a nation- and city-level and then throws them away like trash. The issue is on the individual level we have very little knowledge of why people suffer, Jesus and Job are perfect examples that greatly complicate any discussion on personal judgement.

That said, Amos 3:6 is pretty clear that God is the cause of city-level harm for whatever reason, and the other verses I gave show he is responsible for the destruction of nations because of sin.

A few quick points:
It is God's righteous judgement that sinful Man is not going to live in a perfect world (Genesis 3:16-19).
Death is in the world because of sin (Romans 5:12)
God's wrath is poured out upon the world because of its wickedness and where there is no repentance God gives people over to their wickedness (Romans 1:18ff)
Random events are to be expected until Christ returns, such as will cause God's people to groan within themselves (Romans 8:20-23)
God uses these random events and the wicked acts of men for His own righteous purposes (Genesis 50:20
People are responsible for their own actions and cannot blame God for them (James 1:13-15)
We should not be surprised if we cannot understand God's ways (Romans 11:33-26)
God treats us better than we deserve (Psalm 130:3)
God is worthy to be praised in the very worst of times (Habakkuk 3:16-19)

All your verses are from the Old Testament and are in the context of the old covenant.

If you think the Las Vegas shooting was a judgment from God, who or what is being judged?

I have never abandoned my wife nor divorced her without biblical cause. I am surprised you would support such vile sin.
So you think the Lord Jesus supported such vile sin? It was His words I quoted and nothing else whatsoever. Let's move on to John 8:11.

Context is your friend. She was an adultress. The men standing and judging were, quite likely, her Johns. Her sin was the same as their sin.

Is I the not evident that no one, except the Lord Jesus has that authority?

Why then would you post in such a manner.

Is TCassidy incorrect in the historical account evidenced in posts made by the very one?

You may believe that if you wish to. There is no evidence to support it in the text. The men were hypocrites, no doubt, believing that their own supposed superior virtue qualified them to condemn others.
[They were also chauvinists, since if the woman was taken in flagrante delicto, there must have been a man with her who would have been subject to the same penalty]

My point, however, is that Evan is pilloried every time he posts. He has publicly admitted that he sinned. God knows his heart, not you nor I. Let the poor guy move on, like the woman in John 8, or have the courage of your convictions and put him out of his misery by banning him.

I try not to let my critics get to me. I made the mistake earlier in giving them bullets by mentioning the divorce, and that was my fault.
