It looks like the rear stabilizer was found around 3 miles from the plane. Indicating It came off well before the impact. Without a rear stabilizer cries out to God was their only hope....

I learned about airplane control surfaces before the jet age, but I know they greatly enlarged them to handle the transsonic turbulence that occurs as the jet approaches the speed of sound. The back edge of the horizontal stabilizer moves up or down to cause the plane to clime, descend or remain in level flight. I expect if you lose elevators or elevator control, no amount of thrust adjustment or wing flap adjustment will help.

What we do not know is whether stress cracking, poor maintence, or perhaps a bomb or impact with a drone caused the loss of the vital component. But it is important we do our best to figure out the cause, so we can take action to prevent a needless recurrence.
