Mark 14 (and parallel accounts) when the woman anointed Jesus' feet with expensive perfume -- she did the best she knew. He accepted it.
"Leave her alone...Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me...She did what she could. she poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial. I tell you the truth, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she had done will also be told, in memory of her."

Then there is this from Luke 18:
"Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood up and prayed about himself: 'God, I thank you that I am not like other men --robbers, evildoers, adulterers -- or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.'
Bu the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, 'God, have mercy on me, a sinner.'
I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."

I am also reminded of Jesus talking to the woman at the well in John 4:
"Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth."

The imaginary little drummer boy of the song seems to me to have exemplified all three of these passages.

 

OK, I hate to ruin this great theological thread, but I will ask the obvious question that Aaron wants asked....

What makes the drums biblically unfit?

We all know you don't like the song because it has a drum in it.

 

Um, yes.

Since when has anyone offered "perfect worship"? Yet God accepts it when it is offered in spirit and in truth. ("Spirit and truth" is mentioned by Jesus in John 4 -- Jesus tells the woman that worship at the temple in Jerusalem is more correct that the worship of the Samaritans at their alternative site, but the day has now come where worshipping in "spirit and truth" is the important thing.)

 

Can you give me a scriptural example of this that is not tied to temple worship?

 

Everyone claims that this song is about giving what you have to Jesus. The wise men has gold, etc. but the little drummer boy could only play the drum, so he did.

I tell you, the little drummer boy could not play the drum and was only giving what he wanted, not what he could.

Ask any drummer what the primary role of a drum is and they will tell you that it keeps time. Now look at the song:

If you are playing the drums and relying on livestock to keep the time for you, you are no drummer. How often so we see people trying to tell God what our gifts are, rather than being satisfied with how He gifts us?

I think this little drummer boy song is secretly teaching selfish pride. :thumbs:

Thanks, LadyEagle. It seems we have one of three choices where giving to the Lord is concerned:

1. Give nothing -- for nothing we have is good enough
2. Give what is convenient to give -- used stuff is fine when we get new
3. Give of the best that we have or can give.

I chose number 3. I think that is what the song of the Drummer Boy is about.
