In the context of human history, that's probably a greater likelihood then a barcode or implant.

I'm not going to speculate about what the mark will be (if it is something visible at all). But you have a very good point here.
We (as a whole) tend to interpret scripture in accord with our world. But there are 3rd world countries, there are peoples with no technology (either voluntarily or by choice). What some are demanding (and I grant that it is possible) is that the entire world become like us in order for this passage to be fulfilled.

Remember, when the mark becomes compulsory, those who refuse it for any reason will be liquidated. But some will slip thru the cracks.
What about the mark in Revelation 14:1? Will you be able to buy anything with that?
