The most abused Greek word is???

δυναμις dunamis often simply meaning "ability" thus translated at times "power".

How many times have I heard people say, we get our word dynamite from this word. Therefore this is an explosive kind of power (Acts 1:8 for an example).

Of course there are multiple fallacies going on. But the one that is most obvious is that the Greeks never had anything close to something that resembled dynamite. So how in the world could the power be dynamite? Maybe dynamic (whatever that means).

Good point. One doesn’t have to be a Greek scholar to understand that people will twist the Greek to force their definitions just like they do the English, there is no difference. What gets me is the same “Greek scholars” pulling out this “elitist card” to condescend. Especially them Calvinist, eh Rippon... :tongue3:

I find it hypocritical that you are allowed to critique views that you "dislike" yet when I critique a practice (not a people) who abuse Greek, you then critique me rather than my view.

Notice, I said nothing about "those who don't know Greek." My critique is for those who don't know Greek but abuse it by saying something they have either heard or something like that. If you have no problem with people abusing the Biblical languages of the Bible, then we can debate that. Otherwise, stop being so hypocritical.

I honestly think you "misread" the intention of Greektim. I did not see his OP as condescending to those of us who are not greek scholars, (myself included) unless of course we are talking about the use of the greek alphabet in mathematics.

I think his point is valid, that we should be intellectually cautious about assigning "vernacular" meanings to things. Now that is not to say, that intelligent people cannot disagree on message, interpretation and meaning.

Use of the word 'power' in Acts 1:8 perked my interest. What other word would you have used? For example:

dunamis

The dunamis of 1:8 is conveyed to the apostles through the baptizo of 1:5. Would you agree baptizo to be the most non-translated Greek word? Why is that?
