The Myth of the Criminal Immigrant

The Myth of the Criminal Immigrant

The Trump administration’s first year of immigration policy has relied on claims that immigrants bring crime into America. President Trump’s latest target is sanctuary cities.

“Every day, sanctuary cities release illegal immigrants, drug dealers, traffickers, gang members back into our communities,” he said last week. “They’re safe havens for just some terrible people.”

As of 2017, according to Gallup polls, almost half of Americans agreed that immigrants make crime worse. But is it true that immigration drives crime? Many studies have shown that it does not.

...

In a large-scale collaboration by four universities, led by Robert Adelman, a sociologist at the State University of New York at Buffalo, researchers compared immigration rates with crime rates for 200 metropolitan areas over the last several decades. The selected areas included huge urban hubs like New York and smaller manufacturing centers less than a hundredth that size, like Muncie, Ind., and were dispersed geographically across the country.

According to data from the study, a large majority of the areas have many more immigrants today than they did in 1980 and fewer violent crimes. The Marshall Project extended the study’s data up to 2016, showing that crime fell more often than it rose even as immigrant populations grew almost across the board.

In 136 metro areas, almost 70 percent of those studied, the immigrant population increased between 1980 and 2016 while crime stayed stable or fell. The number of areas where crime and immigration both increased was much lower — 54 areas, slightly more than a quarter of the total. The 10 places with the largest increases in immigrants all had lower levels of crime in 2016 than in 1980.

If you are an illegal immigrant, you committed a crime by entering the country, so by definition all illegal immigrants are criminal. However, we are mostly trying to deport the ones convicted of felonies and build a wall to prevent Mexico from sending all of Latin America into the USA through porous borders as Mexico is preparing to elect a communist president in 90 days. The cartels may be in charge of Mexico. We have to militarize the border to protect ourselves from becoming another Germany or Sweden or England.

Immigrant populations in the United States have been growing fast for decades now. Crime in the same period, however, has moved in the opposite direction, with the national rate of violent crime today well below what it was in 1980.

The op is a strrawman. No one says immigration "drives Crime". Op debunked.

And once again we see the media lying about illegal immigration by publishing an article about immigrants, NOT about ILLEGAL immigrants.

Nobody has suggested that LAWFUL immigration is the problem. The problem is ILLEGAL immigration.

I have lived in a border city for 38 years. Served as a Law Enforcement Officer for many of those years, and have seen first hand the problem of illegal immigrants and crime.

It is time for the FAKE news to stop. The media refuses to differentiate between ILLEGAL immigration and LAWFUL immigration.

The referenced Gallup poll question about crime was about immigration in general and not just illegal immigration. I agree that the two are different things and the Trump quote was more about illegal immigration so that is a fair criticism of the report.

Immigration

For each of the following areas, please say whether immigrants to the United States are making the situation in the country better or worse, or not having much effect. How about -- ?

The crime situation

This may have been confusing as many of the later questions were about illegal immigration. The relationship between illegal immigration and crime may be different than the total immigrant one. I'll have a look to see if anyone has studied that.

Criminal Immigrants: Their Numbers, Demographics, and Countries of Origin

INCARCERATIONS There were an estimated 2,007,502 natives, 122,939 illegal immigrants, and 63,994 legal immigrants incarcerated in 2014. The incarceration rate was 1.53 percent for natives, 0.85 percent for illegal immigrants, and 0.47 percent for legal immigrants (see Figure 1). Illegal immigrants are 44 percent less likely to be incarcerated than natives. Legal immigrants are 69 percent less likely to be incarcerated than natives.

The numbers do not represent all crime because of deportation replacing incarceration in the illegal immigrant population.

Criminal Immigrants in Texas: Illegal Immigrant Conviction and Arrest Rates for Homicide, Sexual Assault, Larceny, and Other Crimes

Natives were convicted of 409,063 crimes, illegal immigrants were convicted of 13,753 crimes, and legal immigrants were convicted of 7,643 crimes in Texas in 2015. Thus, there were 1,749 criminal convictions of natives for every 100,000 natives, 782 criminal convictions of illegal immigrants for every 100,000 illegal immigrants, and 262 criminal convictions of legal immigrants for every 100,000 legal immigrants (Figure 1). As a percentage of their respective populations, there were 56 percent fewer criminal convictions of illegal immigrants than of native-born Americans in Texas in 2015. The criminal conviction rate for legal immigrants was about 85 percent below the native-born rate.
...
There were 951 total homicide convictions in Texas in 2015. Of those, native-born Americans were convicted of 885 homicides, illegal immigrants were convicted of 51 homicides, and legal immigrants were convicted of 15 homicides. The homicide conviction rate for native-born Americans was 3.88 per 100,000, 2.9 per 100,000 for illegal immigrants, and 0.51 per 100,000 for legal immigrants (Figure 2). In 2015, homicide conviction rates for illegal and legal immigrants were 25 percent and 87 percent below those of natives, respectively.

This one looks at the conviction and homicide rates in Texas split by native born, illegal immigrant and legal immigrant.

Well, CATO is an open-borders' group, so I'd be very skeptical of anything they say, especially:

Source: Author’s analysis of Texas Department of Public Safety data, the American Community Survey, and the Center for Migration Studies

the "author's analysis".

According to DHS status indicators, over 245,000 criminal aliens have been booked into local Texas jails between June 1, 2011 and February 28, 2018. During their criminal careers, these criminal aliens were charged with more than 650,000 criminal offenses. Those arrests include 1,323 homicide charges; 77,448 assault charges; 18,410 burglary charges; 78,198 drug charges; 797 kidnapping charges; 44,210 theft charges; 49,921 obstructing police charges; 4,248 robbery charges; 7,012 sexual assault charges; and 9,739 weapon charges. Of the total criminal aliens arrested in that timeframe, over 164,000 or 66% were identified by DHS status as being in the US illegally at the time of their last arrest.

TxDPS - Texas Criminal Alien Arrest Data

and I don't care what their proportion is relative to the "natives" because they shouldn't be here in the first place. The myth that ought to be shattered is the myth of the poor, stuggling "Dreamer":

Young convicts are especially likely to be undocumented immigrants. While undocumented immigrants from 15 to 35 years of age make up slightly over 2 percent of the Arizona population, they make up almost 8% of the prison population. Even after adjusting for the fact that young people commit crime at higher rates, young undocumented immigrants commit crime at twice the rate of young U.S. citizens. These undocumented immigrants also tend to commit more serious crimes.

maybe you ought to push for your country to be open border and come get some of this.

Australia is lucky that they do not have a border with a country like Mexico, which is overrun by narco-terrorists and which is on the verge of electing a communist as president in July. Rich people in Mexico for over one hundred years have advocated sending people north instead of reforming what is a rich country. With 58,000 homeless in Los Angeles County alone, we are unable to support everyone that rich Mexicans want to send to the USA. Australia, England, Germany, and Sweden should take a few million more immigrants.

I can tell you that I arrested hundreds of illegal immigrants committing crimes. I can also tell you that if they were not in the USA, they would not be committing crime here. Simple enough for me.

When i was a cop in the corps in southern cal i caught them all the time

I don' care if a legal immigrant or a native born citizen commits a crime as we accept that possibiliy because they have our permission to be here. It is the crimes that are commtted by illegals that I am concerned about. Any crime that happens by them should not happen because these people should not be here and the groups and politicians that want to allow this situation to continue have the blood of innocent people (legal citizens) on their hands. Period!

...And anyone that colludes with illegal immigrants to vote in our country, which discounts legal citizen's votes, should be jailed as traitors. .

It's pretty sad that a once great American political party has sunk to such a level - they hate the rule of law and their fellow citizens.
I honestly can't figure Democratic party out. They stand for every immoral activity.

The Democrats have always had their problems. They were the party is slavery. The party of Jim Crow. The party that opposed The Civil Rights act. The party that had active Klansmen seated in House and Senate. Party of the whore mongering Kennedys. Party of gay rights and gay marriage. Party who champions murdering the unborn.

The Democrats are also greedy. They want cheap labor and easy votes. Actually, the majority of corporate businessmen are now Democrats.
