The translators need to do much more than the slowly incremental touch ups they've been engaged in since the ESV was rushed onto the scene. Micro steps need to be abandoned; a major revamp is necessary. But to do that, its major proponents would have to admit that their main talking points for the last two decades were bogus. That's a mighty bitter pill for them to swallow. They are between a rock and a hard place.

I have said years ago on the BB that their trajectory would inevitably lead them to a more NIV-like translation. And, of course, that was their primary boogeyman all along. The NIV (at that time the TNIV) was their fundamental reason to dust off the RSV and head off the dastardly Zondervan production. Their rallying cry was basically "The British are coming! The British are coming! We've got to head them off! Here, let's use this neglected piece of artillery, shine it up, so we can then thwart them!" But unlike Paul Revere and the Patriots of old, it didn't work out the way they wanted.

Their antiquated version introduced in modern times is reputed by their experts to contain beautiful, eloquent English. It is reckoned to be stately in its KJV pedigree and warmly embraced by most of the Reform-minded folks. But it will never be accepted internationally as any kind of 'standard' English Bible. There are too many holes in its dikes.

I predict that the current leadership of the promoters of the ESV will be replaced by those of a more realistic mindset. It will have to find a way to engage with modern English versions that use contemporary English. The ESV starship will have to find attractive features that can go head-to-head with the NIV, NLT, NASB2021 and CSB. That will be a formidable undertaking. If the ESV decides to be a holdout for their 'values' then it will be #8 on the charts of the best selling Bibles in 2021.
