From another thread:
And I love that old cross
So I'll cherish the old rugged cross
I will cling to the old rugged cross
To the old rugged cross I will ever be true

To it sounds like worshiping the cross more than the Christ.

I don't know anyone who agrees.

Does Keith have a point?

One of my former pastors always asked us to sing it as "I'll cherish the Christ of the cross," so I presume he had some objections.

I think it is a poetic reference to Christ. The Romans crucified many Jews but in this use, it has a special reference to Christ.

Well, it's a physical reminder.

Given that Christ hasn't been on the cross in nearly 2000 years ... unless we wanna be Catholic about it and wear crucifixes KEEPING Him on the cross ... there no physical reminder without the cross ... OF the cross and what it represents in the sacrifice of our Lord Jesus.

I'm gonna go with ... tilting at windmills. Obsessive Objection Disorder.

May I suggest, that I don’t plan on exchanging the cross of Christ for anything.

I had a thread on this topic some time ago, and you can read about my thoughts there.

Is Paul worshipping the cross in Galations 6:14? Or only boasting about that execution tool?

To what purpose was the cross as viewed by Paul?

At the end of his life, was he laying down a cross in exchange for a crown?
