    Thanks Dan,

    The phone line situation is still in a state of repair. They are rebuilding sme lines for the high speed connection service.

    The devotional was tough on that chapter. It contains so much history of that church and Paul's hard words to them. Amazing how it applies so much to this day and age.

    Just a word on how I develop my devotional reading. I follow a give scriptural devotional guide which dictates the book and chapter. I do not study in advance, but consider the devotional thoughts as I read it. I am drawing a lot on previous studies down through the years.

    May God bless and He draws each of us to His given verse for the moment.

    Jan and I use "Daily Bread" from Radio Bible Class. These devotionals are written months in advance. But God often uses them to speak to us on something in our lives when we read them on the appropriate day.

    On occasion - we read the wrong one - off by a week of so - and still they speak to us.

    Isn't God just wonderful!

    I have used Scripture Union Notes almost forever, but started regular use in 1957. I used to get M.R. Dehaan's little booklet. It was great for sermon illustrations. Not sure why it stopped coming and I didn't renew it.

    The Bible is life's compass. If we follow its lead, we will never take the wrong path in life.

    In the front of my first Bible are these words: "When I know the book from cover to cover. Then shall I cease from reading it."

    The fact is one can never know this book from cover to cover. Just when you think you know it, something new appears.

    Something like a sermon outline. You can preach a dozen times using the same outline and preach 12 different sermons.

    I suspect that is why it has taken me 204 sermons to get through Romans 11:1-10 or so. I started in Romans in April 1998! I've got junior young men who were with me when I started Romans - who fear they will be off to college - and I won't have finished the book.

    They are probably right!

    I feel so sorry for those who only know the Bible academically. I was fortunate, as a young man, to have witnessed the Keswick experience; something beyond the academic. So with Karl Barth, whilst I disagree with his theology, the word becomes the word as we experience it. The Bible is filled with history, drama, biography, war and peace, and it is alive. I know of no other book, no matter how well penned, that is alive.

    Is it wrong to read the Bible in public like an actor reading for a key role? I think it is wrong not to read the Bible with all the gusto one can muster. It is an exciting book and we do an injustice when we read it academically.

    I have the King James on cassette tape - read by a Britisher - can't remember his name right now - but enjoy hearing him read it!

    I thank the Lord that we can own and read God's Word without fear of persecution. This isn't always the case in some parts of the world.

    Abiyah sent me a nice set of the King James on tape, as my eyesight's gradually getting dimmer. I wish now I had memorized more Scripture for the day we can't keep our Bibles, should it ever come to that; tho' I think there will always be a Bible hidden somewhere, we just may not have access to one.

    Good day to all.

    One thing about the Bible and faith, it has survived all sorts of onslaught. During the days of communism in Russia, the one thing that continued was a people of the Book. They treasured even portions of the word. Some even tore pages from a Bible so they could distribute it to others.

    In the Baptist Church, the pews were removed from churches and parishioners had to stand for the whole service. The sermons were pre-approved by the "clergy" appointed by the Kremlin, and read verbatim.

    "My word shall endure forever." One thing I liked about the Plymouth Brethren assembly I attended in London, was the emphasis on memorizing the word. Not just verses, but entire chapters. I don't always remember chapter and verse, but I always remember the words of scripture, and they are a very present help in time of trouble.

    Great day in the Lord - now for a good nights sleep.

    Granny - I have listened to the Bible as read by Alexander Scourby (couldn't remember his name in an earlier post - this nearly 55 YO mind likes to play tricks on me) - it was a blessing to hear the Word read - and a blessing to hear the correct pronounciation - even if it was in a British accent (my apologies to Jim and Sheila - and any other of my British friends - whom I hope I've not offended! [​IMG] )

    I have also bought Bible cassettes on Ebay - at very good prices - so that I could distribute them to various folks!
