    Dan,
First off, my condolences on the great newphew. As you know, I was a military chaplain and still have great feelings for service people who pay the supreme price for their country. It is always sad that in this great age of civilization, we still face such tragedies.

I was always a great letter writer. That was when my hands could handle a pen. I then used a typewriter, but managed to keep up. From the very beginning, I tried to write a letter to each couple I married, each year. Over the years that became the equivalent of a letter a day. Only three couples faced divorce. Because of the contact, I was able to assist two of them, and the third just fell by the wayside. Letter writing is almost a lost art to-day.

I understand busy. A number of years back, my older daughter was asked what I did for a living. She said, Nothing. He is a minister. She knew how busy I was, but her thinking was that I didn't have a job like other fathers. I wonder how many people actually think that of ministers. I wonder if the young people seeking ministry appreciate how busy you can make yourself. I have seen lazy ministers, and it shows, and I have seen men who laboured tirelessly.

Sometimes I thought about architecture, knowing that my wages could exceed $100,000.00 per year, but the calling remained up front, even through times when we didn't have two nickles to rub together....."for the prize of the high calling...."

    Cheers,

    Jim

    I really think I would like a cinder-block house...have even considered a hay-bale house!

I love getting mail of any kind...used to write looong letters, and now enjoy the ease of email.

Being a preacher seems to be one of the most rewarding callings a man could ever hope to have. God bless you both.

    Granny,

The trend to-day is foam block houses. They are rodent free, including termites, hurricane and tornado resistant. I have drawn the plans for three of them in this area, and one in Alaska. I'll try to find the website for them. Just for your interest.

Always enjoyed ministry; every aspect of it. The glamour part of preaching is just a small fraction of the work, however. There is a lot of work in the trenches.

    Cheers,

    Jim

I'll be watching for that website, broJim; sounds really interesting and lasting, for sure! My brother who lives in Georgia does some kind of architectural drawings...I think right now he's designing a school. My other brother there makes signs for businesses.

I come from a family of preachers(uncles) and married into a family of preachers(pa'n'law, etc)...so I know all about trench work. ~smile~

We've entertained many a preacher in our home over the years and our door is always open, even now. In the old days, revival would last for several days, sometimes weeks, and the visiting evangelist would come stay with us. It was an exciting time.

My son'n'law #1 is God-called and his home is a haven for preachers as well. Daughter(Farmer's Wife) has always wanted a "Bed and Breakfast"...now she has one-for 'like-minded' folks, haha.

Granny, This site will have examples of a foam building and the system. You might have to search through the site to find them.

    Cheers,

    Jim

Well, thank you for the virtual-tour(is that how it's called?) There were some really nice buildings...some were huge! (Ours seems like a closet compared to them, haha). But if'n I ever get rich enough to build, this sure seems the way to go! Were any of those your designs? Thanks again-that was fun!

    Granny:

No, none of my plans are on that website. Over the years, I have worked mainly on regular homes. I have designed a few commercial buildings, but nothing outstanding.

Living in Kingston for so long, I have worked on many historical buildings. Some folk buy an historical building and move it to another area. The building is taken down stone by stone and rebuilt on another site. One such building took over a year to complete and cost 1.4 million dollars. It became a guest house for one of the rishest families in Canada.

The foam blocks have been around for many years in Europe, but have just caught on in North America. They are very efficient.

    Cheers,

    Jim

Hiya Bri-Glo! It's really great to *see* ya! You hire men to mow for ya? WOW! These past two weeks when my house was being demolished, 2 of my grandsons were here everyday & I "bribed" them into mowing fer me...heh-heh, 'course, a batch of hot cookies and cold milk and a little moola helped alot!

So I did get a "break", but since it rained all weekend, it grew faster than ever! Hey, how 'bout this...one of those neat houses of broJim's & your idea for a yard-now that's a life to think about, eh? Oh, btw, once a pine tree died and I didn't have the heart to dig it up, so I DID spraypaint it green!

Granny loves her trees/shrubs/flowers and just as long as I have a front porch with a swing and a rocking chair, I'll be content...especially if some of y'all drop by.

Granny - don't know if you would want to use this stuff - but there are herbicides available - that retard the growth of grass - rather than kill it. But I'm thinking that you would have to have a licensed herbicide applicator apply the stuff.

Dan - Just trying to be helpful!

I think maybe granny would prefer sheep ultimately in her freezer rather than goats. [IMG]

I had a lovely goose who adopted me & we became quite close, but somehow he made it into the dogpen & the dalmation won... There have been 2 loners circling me lately~hmmm

I live with an old goat, haha---I've always wanted to say that! We had a '67GTO that we called "the goat"...but reckon the only way I'll ever get a live one is if those up the road moseys on down my way. I did see 4 up close this weekend when some friends of ours came over from Texas to buy them from son'n'law's pa. I didn't realize they bowed on their front legs-it was so cute!

I'd like some sheep too. Trouble is, as with my chickens & pigs I once had, I tend to name everything and therefore can't bring myself to kill/eat'em!

I've got the aches this morning from knocking out the back yard...which took me 2 hrs. BroDan is right when he sez by the time I get finished, it's time to start over. ~~granny rolling eyes~~

I'm a thinking that if I don't get the mower out soon - and mow my lawn - I'll have to hire a farmer to do with his tractor and hay cutting machine!

Good day to all who pass this way. Guard your day with your soul. It is very precious. We never know when it will be our last mortal moment, yet so often we take it and things and people for granted.

One of the most precious scriptures to me is that little phrase uttered by our Lord Jesus, "Ye are my friends." I like that. Above all other things, including my shortcomings, Jesus is my friend.

    Cherish the moment.

    Cheers,

    Jim

Thank you, broJim~I have always tried to live each day as tho' it may be my last...and I try to be very careful, especially with loved ones, what I say...ya just never know when they walk out that door what will happen. Also, while the mister & I have had our spats over the years, we always try to kiss & make up before the sun goes down. ~smile~
