The Orthodox Corruption of Scripture by Bart Ehrman

Dear Friends,

As part of my larger work in progress on identifying orthodox corruptions from the Gospel of Matthew, I just wrote up an evaluation of Bart D. Ehrman, The Orthodox Corruption of Scripture (Oxford: OUP, 1993).

You may download my evaluation by clicking on this sentence.

It is perhaps not as harsh as some might have expected, but naturally I think it is right on the money. Please use this thread to interact with what I say (or what Ehrman says, especially if you think I've got him wrong).

Sincerely,

Jonathan C. Borland

isn't his basic premise pretty flawed though, as even he would have to admit that essential MOST if not ALL of the current NT Greek texts are essential what was originally written?

that he strains at a small minority of varient readings, and focred to swallow and admit still almost all of it is as God originally wrote it?

Is this a regional ETS paper? Or is this for the big conference coming up in a few weeks???

Found some punctuation mistakes btw if you are still proofreading.

It's a good step in the right direction for a basis of continued studies. Ehrman is a significant figure who continues to need scholarly refutation.

The text which Sola mentioned is exactly the one I was sitting thinking about as I read through the piece. The underlying thesis which Ehrman operates with, from von Harnack et al, is thoroughly investigated and given a sound drubbing.

For Ehrman's specific works, I think of another text called Misquoting Truth by Timothy Paul Jones (who is on faculty at Southern): http://www.amazon.com/dp/0830834478/?tag=baptis04-20

Dan Wallace has really shown, in live debates, the insanity of Ehrman's requirements for a text. Essentially (which you can find this data in video format) Ehrman wants a first century text that is 99.9995% (or something insane) accurate to other manuscripts in order to be convinced. Wallace has called him out for this, which is like saying "I want to see an intact dinosaur that has been preserved in total in amber without any significant decay in order to believe in them." That is an effective line of critique.

It is rather good and reinforces a lot of your points. What would be interesting is to see how one takes the empirical data and evidences which are exploited by Ehrman and then line them up with the guiding presupposition of him and others like Pagels and such.

Please do let us know when the whole paper is up. I wish I could make it to ETS, but alas I have other priorities...(i.e. vacation.) :)

Dear Friends,

Thanks for the comments. Please don't use the link in this thread any longer, but just access the complete article in the thread located here:

"Identifying Real Orthodox Corruptions of Scripture: Some Guidelines Based on Probable Orthodox Corruptions from the Gospel of Matthew."

As far as Ehrman, I pray for him that when he wakes up in a cold sweat wondering if he is wrong (cf. his admission of this in God's Problem) that he may humble himself before it's too late.

As far as textual criticism of the NT goes, he's one of my favorites for his directness and willingness to oppose anyone and everyone when he is convinced they are wrong. Problem is, I think a number of his convictions are wrong!

Sincerely,

Jonathan
