As that person will not be religious per say, but a world and military leader...

Could very see the last pope as fufilling the role of the false prophet, and RCC as worldwide church in last days though!

Would the pontifex maximus and the holy roman empire be considered types of antichrist?

Over a billion souls are involved in this type of delusion. Adolf Hitler was in this group. (Further study: Hitler was a Christian, at: www.hiddenmysteries.org/religion/christianity/hitler.shtl. There is a lot of insight as to what a real Christian might be compared to the modern definition: Catholic/Protestant. Use a critical thinking paradigm rather than the standard dogma to sort through the sceptic bias.)

Followers of Allah is another sizeable group which is antichrist and could produce The Antichrist.

Now what?

Even so, come, Lord Jesus.

Hitler was not a Christian--certainly true

One could make a similar observation regarding the Pontifex Maximus.

It depends on how one defines Christian. If the definition is: those who follow the teachings of Jesus; 99% of Christendom does not fit the definition. Nominal Christianity(in name only) includes the billion+ who follow the so-called vicar of Christ. Christ has no vicar. Most of Christendom are following the commandments of men not The Lord Jesus Christ.

"We ought to obey God, rather than men". See the Book of Acts.

Even so, come, Lord Jesus.

would say church of Rome has followed the spirit of antichrist, and has taken on practices/doctrinesfrom demons, a false gospel, not true one!

But still do not see any pope as Antichrist yet to come, final one, but could very well be his false prophet mouthpiece, heading up one world church!

Doesn't even Roman Catholicism have a belief about the last pope being a false one?

A lot of important canonical stuff changed at Vatican II. Now there are two basic groups: the ones who do the mass in Latin and the other English or whatever with only the magical Latin words for real presence. The Latin only group says the others are apostates and have usurped the throne of Peter. Interesting: the usurpers got usurped. Amazing what goes on the world of usurpation. Apparently we are in another period of anti-popes and anti-popes emeritus.

Actually, we are near the end of time.

In 1John 2 we are told that there are "many antichrists" and that they had come in John'2 day. (as far as I know - no other writer or book uses that term).

So the question from a 1John 2 perspective is more like "could the Papacy be one of the antichrists".

And from a 2Thess 2 perspective -- could the papacy be one of the fulfillments of the "man of sin". Interesting that the Dan 7 subject on wikipedia includes a chart showing the acceptance in history among Protestants of the Papacy fitting that term.

Click on "Show" at the bottom in the Appendix "Interpretations" section of that page.

Ironically, it is that group of conservative Catholics that are the one main segment of the population that the present Pope cannot seem to please.
Every gesture, from his choice of the name Francis to his penchant for cold-calling parishioners, has endeared him with a most unusual fanclub, including atheists and gays. He has been on the cover of the Advocate and Rolling Stone and he was voted Time’s Man of the Year.

In fact, toeing the new party line instilled by Francis is proving to be the greatest challenge for conservative Catholics who are quite used to a prudent and predictable Pope. Francis’s comments about showing mercy to divorced couples, not judging gay priests and even toying with further examination of civil unions outside the church have proven to be tough for conservative Catholics to swallow.
