Where did anger come in? His sermon wasn't angry. The destruction of the television was a premeditated prop to demonstrate an important point. The more simple and less violent example was to cut the cord. The way to etch how important this issue is in to the minds of people who love that idol is to put a bat through it. It is apparently effective in getting people to talk about the sermon on message boards as well. :)

During the 2nd World War, I recall reading about a book burning, I think it was in Virginia, but don't quote me on that. All the books belonged to a German family. As they were burning the books they discovered that several of those books were biblical and including a German Bible. The people walked away ashamed, and changed their views about some irrational outbursts of anger.

The same thing applies to the telly. It is controlled by an off/on switch, and does have some very good programming.

    Cheers,

    Jim

Because smashing others property with a baseball bat is not love. It is not legal, it is not good behavior, and it is not the conduct of a pastor or any Christian.

Our duty is to preach the word of God, not smash with a bat things we do not agree with.

I do not agree with homosexuality. Would it be a loving act to smash a gay person with a baseball bat?

DO NOT ANSWER, I will answer for you. It would not be a loving thing to do.

Let every man be convinced in his own mind (Romans 14:5).

That's my view on the TV issue.

    1. Understatement, but here it goes: Violent outbursts and love aren't often synonymous.
    2. TV's aren't vile. They can be used for evil stuff (moral filth, bad language, perversions, and Partridge Famly re-runs). Or, they can be used for good stuff (we're showing Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace on video; My kids love Veggie Tales, Thomas the Tank Engine, and Max Lucado's Hermie series). It takes wisdom, self-discipline, and some forethought...but one can find worthwhile stuff.
    3. Certainly a pastor should offer guidance as to biblical principles in screening our kids' entertainment...but it ain't the pastor's job IMO to destroy TV's, call 'em "hell-a-visions," and lay guilt on parents who choose the path of careful discernment rather than getting rid of the TV. If parent(s) decide to get rid of it, fine. But that should be a parents' say, not a pastor's. (IMO)
    4. There could be serious ramifications...what if you had a TV/DVD combo, and you had the Bible on DVD playing in a TV that Mister Anderson smashed. In his theology, he would have smashed Jesus. That's baaaaad.

OK, so 3 out of 4 were serious points.

I have a dell comp--2.6 dual core intel, 2 gig ram, etc. It just crashed trying to diagram your sentence.
Just kidding...sorry I jumped the conclusion. That's what I get for not reading your post more carefully.

I did listen to that entire sermon (several months ago).

He did seem pretty angry to me in quite a few places.

I think a wise pastor, if he felt led to do such as Mister Anderson did, should've warned the parents of the little ones ahead of time, so they could prepare the kids/take them out/whatever.

Now, that's not a "sin" issue...but that would've been the more responsible course, IMO.

The ownership of the televisions in this hypothetical red herring was not established.

A pastor's duty is to rebuke, exhort etc. He was rebuking the viewing of television and pounded the point home.

Ummm...you're equating hitting a human being with a baseball bat to destroying an inanimate object? I'm glad you answered it and saved me the risk of getting it wrong.

    [Edit: Rebuked to rebuking]

Partridge family re-runs are vile on many levels.

    Point 4 was pretty good.

    Rufus1769 just kidding:)

Your computer is far more vile then any television. There are things that can be viewed on your computer that can not be found on any TV set. Further, I have never heard of any child predator useing the TV set to lure a child away from home to harm them.

This question is for you and Mr. Sanderson (if he is reading) HOW can you say that TVs should be smashed with bats becasue they are so vile and yet use your computer that you obviously have not smashed?

Taking into account your position on television, please justify your use of a computer and the internet.

Poison of dragons is a good description of the threads this individual starts and the unnecessary bickering he starts then backs out. People, if we started ignoring his threads, he would go away.

Instead, I'll PM you my shipping info, and I'll take care of that "vile machine." That evil, bad, awful gutless wonder...

BTW...does it have a DVD burner? How much ram?

I'm just asking so...er....I'll know what size hammer to use. Yeah, that's it. That's the ticket.

"Whatever TV they were watching" is indescriptive of who the ownership of the television was.

It's a Radioshack TRS-80. No DVD burner but the prettiest green monitor you've ever seen. :)

But it was described that the TV was owned by someone. Someone else.
