The RIGHT reason for coming to America; and the wrong reason!

I believe, and this is my heart and gut speaking .... that the only acceptable reason for coming to America should and would be TO BECOME AN AMERICAN. This includes, but of course is not limited to, total ASSIMILATION.

If a person comes here for any other reason(s) they will never become Americans and thetefore, never become a productive.citizen, because they will never have the drive or desire to adopt the traditions, values and customs of this country. Those are qualities that help each of us to maintain and keep America strong and presenting a UNITED front.

When a person comes here wanting to keep all their customs and traditions, they become divisive to those who love America and live as Americans.

That is my view .... I am sure there will be opposing views. So, fire away, but if you oppose my view, please explain how anything but complete assimilation serves for the better good of this nation and those who have adopted this countries values, customs, traditions and lifestyle? When I was working on Reagan's SDI program in the 80's there was a shortage of theoretical physicists (and other types of PhD's). It was common practice for defense contractors to hire foreigners to work on SDI under a year or multi-year contracts under the green card program. These brainiacs would come here and work for a couple of years then go back to there native country.

These people helped the US win the cold war. I'd say that served the better good of this country without them having to assimilate.

He was probably going through the Fox News archive and heard Hannity talking about nothing short of assimilation for Mexican immigrants ( something he and the mother ship have disseminated as a talking point) and is now also applying to Muslim immigrants.

There are no original thoughts coming from the West coast. He's like so many political conservatives who hear something on Fox News or conservative talk and then comes back and repeats it as though no one else has heard the talking points on the same shows.

Total Assimilation? What are we, The Borg? My mother (and her mother) were immigrants. They both came to this country, worked hard, and made a life for themselves. I happen to enjoy the (non-American) culture of my mother. I enjoy her cooking and art work.

America has long been a nation of mixed cultures, and I for one like it that way.

Assimilation has been the strength of the melded society in America. Hopefully new immigrants come to America for the freedom and opportunities it offers and become "Americans" in the process.

When immigrants of any kind refuse to become Americans, America as we know it will end.

This whole assimilation stuff is nothing more than dimestore rhetoric so that political conservatives can quickly spout off the talking points. I bet none of them have a problem going to Germantown or Chinatown. It's the immigrant lack of total assimilation and holding to of their own cultures and traditions that has flavored the United States as a melting pot. We got a little bit of everything. Just look at New York City. You've got Blacks, Whites, Italians,Irish, German,Russian, Polish,Greek, English, Chinese, Korean, Filipino, Puerto Rican, Dominican, Jamaican, Trinidad and Tobagan, folks from Barbados, Guyana, Belize, Grenada, Haiti. All of these folks inhabit very distinct sections of New York and give it it's flavor. They haven't TOTALLY assimilated and neither should anyone else have to totally assimilate.

If the early settlers didn't totally assimilate, stop trying to make it a condition for other immigrants.
