The Seven Deadly Sins

Do I agree with the seven deadly sins? Well, a little yes and a little no.

They are not in the Bible - well, in that sense. They are sins, of course, but they are not listed together in a Biblical group and they are not called "deadly" as a group. The Catholic church made up this list and called them deadly.

The seven things that God can't stand are listed in Proverbs 6:16-19.

  1. Haughty eyes
  2. Lying
  3. Murder
  4. Hearts that devise evil
  5. Feet that run to evil
  6. A false witness
  7. One who stirs up dissension
They are called abominations. There are other things in the Bible that God can't stand and are called abominations also.

All of our states in the United States have various laws - big and small - , ordinances, and protection from these things to some degree.

And it will be a sad day indeed if we ever see the Supreme Court declaring that individual states cannot make rules protecting us from the social consequences of them.

Thanks for the list. I appreciate your posting it.

Can those sins from Proverbs be fit into the 7 deadly sins?

I would phrase it as can the Catholic church's 7 deadly sins fit in with the Proverbs passage since the Proverbs passage came first.

To a degree. They are all listed and discussed as sins in the Bible even though the two lists aren't exactly alike.

Personally, I think the Catholic list and the Proverbs list both fit under the big three list found in 1 John 2:

  • the pride of life
  • the lust of the eyes
  • the lust of the flesh
John says that this is "all that is in the world".

I agree.

I also believe that all sins can be fit as sins into the ten commandments.
