They were blind to Him as messiah, far worse then eschatology views!
Jesus was born to atone for sinners, and to be raised up again as the Lord, but we get doctrines and theology mainly from Epistles!

Actually God planned out Jesus' earthly ministry to the very point of Himself being the Lamb. There is no one set reason, because the Sanhedrin was made up of 71 humans. God had to convince a majority with many reasons to want Jesus dead.
