Oh, yeah. My parents told me that in our little Texas town of about 200 people then, in 1938, a strange man had come to town based on some kind of correspondence with a middle-aged unmarried lady-- a "mail order groom," per se. Everyone made fun of him-- and of her for marrying him. Then on that Sunday night, he came bursting into a church service saying the Martians have landed and are trying to take us over. This, of course, was based on Orson Wells' War of the Worlds broadcast, which many people did not catch the disclaimer that it is a drama and not genuine news.

Not necessarily fake news. It may have been the truth as different people saw it.
I was good friends with a pastor who wrote a book on his experience in leading a small Christian group that met once a month. I was a member of the group. When I read the book I realized it was the absolute truth from his perspective. If I had written the book some parts would have been different. We both would have told the truth from our own perspective.
Bruce Catton was great. Shelby Foote was great. MacKinlay Kantor was great. There have been a lot of really good historians who have written about the Civil War.
Many of the memoirs of the generals in the war are available free online.
No, it was propaganda. As I believe Gerald L. K. Smith said, there is no such thing as public opinion. Only published opinion.

That's military....to them civilians are undisciplined, immoral, not honorable scum. Personally, I concur with that assessment. Wait till everyone gets a taste of Mueller....there will be blood flowing like a river & know one will be exempt. Gird your loins boys & girls.
