The account of the rich man and Lazarus has been labeled by some as a parable. The account as given is not called a parable. And regarding the flame mentioned in the account, Abraham tells the rich man, "They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them." What is notable, most cross references fail to provide the following references:
Deuteronomy 32:22.
Song of Solomon 8:6.
Psalms 86:13.

The account of Lazarus and the rich person in found in Luke 16:19-31. The flames of torment might be the burning desire to have heeded God when the opportunity for salvation was at hand.
