Things accomplished by Jesus dying on the cross

I was doing a little personal study about what things were accomplished by Jesus dying on the cross. I was wondering if anyone could add some other thoughts and verses on this subject.

**Note I am not placing these in any order of importance, and only numbering them as a list.

1- Jesus conquered Satan and the powers of evil.

Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same, that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and might free those who through fear of death were subject to slavery all their lives. Heb 2:14,15

2- The death of Jesus enabled Christians to become victorious over their own “flesh” or “old self”.

Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have become united with {Him} in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be {in the likeness} of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old self was crucified with {Him,} in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; Rom 6:4-6

3- Christ became propitiation for our sin

For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. Rom 5:10

In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace Eph 1:7

4- Jesus death was substitutionary

{He} who was delivered over because of our transgressions, and was raised because of our justification. Rom 4:25

5- Showed Gods love for mankind

"For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. John 3:16

But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Rom 5:8

6- It demonstrated the righteousness of God

whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith. {This was} to demonstrate His righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He passed over the sins previously committed; Rom 3:25

among other things, it finished the work of salvation and redemption of all who were to be saved and redeemed.
Hebrews 9:12 -

Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

Either us included ALL of mankind, and therefore all of mankind are redeemed and saved, or US refers to all for whom the work of redemption is intended. Take your pick.

Thanks for the overwhelming response

No seriously thanks to those that added something. I guess maybe this wasn't very interesting to most, but I found it interesting. Usually I only think of one maybe two things, I didn't expect to find this many even though really none of them were unknown to me or new to me. I just never put it all together in my mind like this.

Anyone have any more?

It's a great topic!

Tore the veil so that we have access to the Throne

19Therefore, brethren, since we have confidence to enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus, 20by a new and living way which He inaugurated for us through the veil, that is, His flesh,
21and since we have a great priest over the house of God,
22let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Heb. 10

He is the Mediator of a new covenant:
But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, by as much as He is also the mediator of a better covenant, which has been enacted on better promises. Heb. 8:6

Piper has a book, Fifty Reasons Why Jesus Came to Die, which I'm guessing you would like.

I have a listing of many of them from my own study (about 40something) and they all matched Pipers book that Marcia pointed out, and then some :)

He provided our 1. Sanctification,
2. justification,
3. We are become a new creation,
4. Adoption,
5. heirs and
6. joint-heirs with Christ (these actaully have different aspects to the meaning)
7. seated with Christ in heavenly places,
8. given every spiritual blessing,
9. received the Holy Spirit,
10. authority to come boldly before the throne of grace,
11. being His child,
12. made righteous,
13. Security in Christ, - everlasting life (something that can not be taken away)
14. an ambassador,
15. a king,
16. a priest,
17 been given forgiveness,
18. a minister of reconcillation
19....

I can go on but there are many, many more ...

Very good topic.

I did the same study a couple of years ago. Here is a small part of that article:

WHAT DID CHRIST DO FOR US BY HIS DEATH?
1. He redeems us, Eph. 1:7-8; Rom. 3:24
2. He makes atonement (reconciliation) for us, Rom. 3:25
3. He delivers us from actual slavery, Heb. 2:14- 15
4. He cleanses and sanctifies us, Titus 2:14; Eph. 5:25- 26
5. He unlocks all of God's promises for us, 2 Cor. 1;20. What promises?, Jer. 31:33- 34 (compare Heb. 8:10- 12), God's grace toward us in sanctification (10- 11) and justification (12), new heart and spirits, Deut. 30:6; Ezek. 36:26.
6. He conforms us to His resurrection, Rom. 6:57.
7. He brought us out of an empty, worthless lifestyle, 1 Pet. 1:18- 19.
8. He brought us faith, Phil. 1:29; Gal. 5:22.
9. And, in case I forgot something, here is the catch-all: He brought us everything, 1 Cor. 4:7.

Notice: In none of these verses - nor in any of the Bible - do we find even a mention of "provide" or "provision" of Christ for seekers. The word is not even used that way. Every passage that speaks of what Christ did for us, the elect, speaks of what Christ actually did, not merely made possible.

The rest is true and good but can we please leave the Calvinistic/Reformed matra out of at least one thread! We have plenty of them already and no need to try to start one up again.

No it does not have to mean all are saved as in universal salvation. It can also mean obtained but not received.

Then the phrase should have been ended by the Holy Spirit, who created our tongues and gave us speech, with "having obtained eternal redemption".
The second part of your reply is your interpretation, you are entitled to it, though.

I'm afraid to say the problem is in your perception. I was just going down the list of verses that specifically speak of the benefits of Christ's death for us. And I also made a note about what was missing in that list. This is not just Reformed or Calvinistic - it is basic Bible study. I didn't plan to get back into the Reformed/Arminian thread. I too am sick of them. But neither am I going to water down my post just to accommodate someone's intolerance to what's in the Bible.

What did I say that is incorrect?

 Intolerance to what's in the bible? No dear friend is intolerance to those things superimposed upon the scriptures.
I agree it is basic bible studyto know one thing or another. However I must say, I really do love your subtle and sly little ad-homs placed throughout and the way your assumed superiority trickles through your posts

What was incorrect - your entire "Notice".
No the word 'provision' or 'provided' is not specifically stated with respect to these things but neither is the word Trinity, theology, eschetology, ect.. in relation to those things they apply to. They are inferred from the text and grammer. Just because a 'word' is not specifically used does mean it is not inferred or understood. You were trying to bring in your view of Limited Atonement into the thread of which there is NO need.

Example of what I mean by being inferred -
Just because Christ 'DID' obtain those various things for us in salvation, does not equate to us already having them. Of which I know you agree. Thus if we do not yet have them then by defintion it has been 'provided' for us and therefore 'provision' has indeed been made.

pro-vide  /prəˈvaɪd/ Pronunciation [pruh-vahyd] .

–verb (used with object) 1. to make available; furnish: to provide employees with various benefits.
2. to supply or equip: to provide the army with new fighter planes.
3. to afford or yield.
4. Law. to arrange for or stipulate beforehand, as by a provision or proviso.
5. Archaic. to prepare or procure beforehand.

–verb (used without object) 6. to take measures with due foresight (usually fol. by for or against).
7. to make arrangements for supplying means of support, money, etc. (usually fol. by for): He provided for his children in his will.
8. to supply means of support (often fol. by for): to provide for oneself.

Thanks for the additions everyone. I just started this study, looks like it will be a little more in depth than I had first anticipated.

You missed my main point. You encounter a "Calvinist" comment and see red. No, I wasn't being subtle. I was being straightforward.

My point is that, in all those atonement verses, an actual action is done to/for the elect. Not one of them has a provision proviso.

This was an outstanding discovery to me in my Bible study and I just wanted to share it.
If it strikes you as an "assumed superiority", well, that's dust on your porch. I can't stop you from being judgmental, though I cringe at it.

Which is really a result of thinking God created you for salvation but created other for the sole purpose of damning them.

How pathetic can you get? To resort to such petty accusations. Do you two feel insecure or threatened from someone with high intellect? Someone who has obviously placed much meditation and contemplation in God's word?
