On Dec 22, 1944 the Germans demanded a full surrender of the 101 Airborne. Acting Div commander Gen Anthony C. McAuliffe rejected the demand. His one word answer to the enemy "NUTS"

Great one word line!!!! One for all time.

I'm afraid a one word answer to the same demand, under similar circumstances today, would be entirely different and decidedly more graphic.

Hasn't everyone?

Yeppers, 2 Battalion PPCLI. We won a presidential citation for rescuing the 101st airborne when they were dropped in the middle of Chinese forces in the middle of a swamp.

Cheers,

Jim

To date, no member of the 101st who faught at Bastogne has ever admitted they needed to be "rescued".

I wonder what they would say about your "rescue".

I believe what "Ninety Nine" had in mind was the rescue of the 101st during the hot, hot war in Korea

The 101st was not "rescued" during the siege of Bastogne---Patton may have come and "releaved" German pressure on the sore point---but the 101st held until siege was over----aint' you guys ever watch Band of Brothers????

My former father-in-law was an infantryman and part of Patton's relief force. He had a 'thank you' general order from Patton thanking the men for marching 100 miles in three days, with snow up to their knees. For years after the war, shrapnel was still working it's way out of his arms and he'd pull it out with tweezers.
