As a trained persuader, I’m seeing a dangerous situation forming that I assume is invisible to most of you. The setup is that during the presidential campaign Trump’s critics accused him of being Hitler(ish) and they were sure other citizens would see it too, thus preventing this alleged monster from taking office.

They were wrong. The alleged monster took office.

Now you have literally millions of citizens in the United States who were either right about Trump being the next Hitler, and we will see that behavior emerge from him soon, or they are complete morons. That’s a trigger for cognitive dissonance. The science says these frightened folks will start interpreting all they see as Hitler behavior no matter how ridiculous it might seem to the objective observer. And sure enough, we are seeing that.

Robert Clary is a death camp survivor and lost much of his family to the Holocaust.

Lots of people would not talk about it in the 1960s. Survivors often didn't want to deal with it and the mainstream culture was trying to forget about the horrible decade from 1935-1945. My maternal grandparents NEVER spoke of it to me during their lives, and I didn't realize I had any personal connection to it until after my grandmother died in the early 1990s and I was cleaning out her storage room with my mother. We found a box full of their papers from that period, and found all of their "Ex Enemy" identification cards issued by the Allied powers. That was when my mother first told me that they had been imprisoned in several labor camps in Poland by the Nazis. It is a strange thing to suddenly discover evidence that our government considered your mother an enemy. My aunt still won't talk about it.

Trump is obviously not Hitler, but he does has the characteristics of that type of person.

These revolutionary leaders need foes. They exaggerate the problems. They make everything look gloomy. They lie, cheat and slander their opponents while casting themselves as the saviors of the nation. Hitler chose the Jews to blame for everything that was wrong in Germany. Khomeini made the Shah and his westernization plans his scapegoats.
