Last Sunday Morning this verse was found in our Lesson Plan:
1Sa 7:10 (KJV1611 Edition):
And as Samuel was offering vp the burnt offering, the Philistines drewe neere to battell against Israel: but the Lord thundred with a great thunder on that day vpon the Philistines, and discomfited them, and they were smitten before Israel.
The six people (myself /the teacher/, 4 regular students /3 of which themselves are capable of teaching the lesson/, and a visitor /in town on business, probably a Bible teacher back home/ ) there did not in their regular life use the term 'discomfited'. - none of us knew what the term 'discomfited' meant. We had pooled our knowledge and didn't know what it mean. Perchance the term 'discomfited' is related to 'smitten'?
We checked the other verses containing the the term 'discomfited' and still didn't know what it meant:
'Discomfited' appears in the KJV (the one with Strong's numbers from e-sword) in nine places. It is the translation of:
H2000 - 5 times
H2522 - one time
H2729 - one time
H3807 - one time
H4522 - one time
The the term 'discomfited' in 1 Samuel has the H2000 meaning. None of the five uses in the KJVs have a clear definition of the term the term 'discomfited'.
Read my signature below my post - it has a way that WORKS in this example - try two translations.
1Sa 7:10 (Geneva Bible, 1599 Editiion):
And as Samuel offered the burnt offering, the Philistims came to fight against Israel: but the Lord thundred with a great thunder that day vpon the Philistims, and scattered them: so they were slaine before Israel.
Ah ha, God's Bible in 1610 was much easier to understand, with acutal 21st Century (2001-2100) term 'scattered' what the term 'discomfited' meant. In my opinion God did NOT inspire the KJV Translators to put a vaild 21st Century (2001-2100) term into 1 Samuel 7:10. Nevertheless, God has used the KJVs both the original one translated by skilled translators and the later editions NOT translated by skilled translators but by editors with a knack for spelling and punctuation - God used those KJVs in a mighty way to preserve His Holy Bible, the Written Word of God, for those Generations. Likewise God uses translations like the NASB, 1995 Revision, to preserve the Word of God for the generation 1995-2025. All Scriputure (2 Timothy 3:16) includes various English Bibles (and non-English, I just can't read any of them) has been and will continue to be preserved through the manifold Grace of God's Divine Providence. Glory to the Lord!
The method of understanding the KJV 'word of God' that works is NOT the KJVO method (damn God's other Bibles) but is to compare the KJV to the other Bibles (translations & versions) God has given us.
I'm a practical sort of person - if it works, use it; if it doesn't work do not use it. I was a professional engineer for 30 years (now a successfully retired engineer) - I got a lot of miles (and well over a million dollars) dealing with THINGS THAT WORD. In the world of Baptists, who believe in both the Doctrine of the Priesthood of the Believer and the Doctrine of Soul Competency - there needs to be no KJVO debate, just prayful comparing of our collective insights into God's wealth of soul cleansing information in His Written Word of God.
