The picture painted here just does not fit either the Restoration period or the subsequent twilight years of the fall of the first temple. The enemies here were ostensibly followers of the Lord. They were called “brethren” and spoke piously, “Let the LORD be glorified…”. Yet they cast out, excommunicated, the true followers of Christ. All of this fits the Pharisees and Jewish leaders of the first century.
