During the 43 days of the federal government shutdown, which also corresponded with the first 43 days of fiscal year 2026, the Republicans and Democrats increased the national debt by $484 billion. If one extrapolates those 43 days to an entire fiscal year, that would amount to an increase of $4.1 trillion. Let's hope that somehow, somewhere saner heads will prevail than what the two major parties have shown so far in their profligacy.
