I agree when you use it as "God of Abraham, God of Isaac, and God of Jacob. It is used like what He is, not His name. In Exodus 3:15 the original transcripts showed the example of using both who He is: God of Abraham, etc., and His name: YHWH. It seems to me that taking it out just because of Pharisee man-made rules is wrong. Even Jesus warned about those things. The Bible warns about taking away or altering God's word. Or should I say YHWH's word. "God" is not the English translation of YHWH. YHWH is God.

*********"his Son is Saviour whether we call him Jesus or Yeshuah. In fact I would consider the Apostles, writing the New Testament in Greek and using the Greek equivalent, to be an approved example.

You are right, that is the English translation from the Greek used, but "Yahshua" links the Divinity of Jesus to God - Yahweh is God and Yahshua <--meaning Yahweh is salvation.

*************Getting hung up on the words rather than what they represent is just the error of the KJV-onlyists, only with a different target.

I do rely on my KJV!!! But for the record, just for supplement I use NASB and HCSB, but always giving priority to KJV! Please do not scold me for that, you will never change my mind. You have the right to have your "favorite" for whatever reasons, as do I. But my point is that of all the names in the Bible, why tag YHWH with a "title" so to speak. Zeus was considered a god, as many, many, many other pagan gods. It seems to me that this is dangerous waters to be treading in. If He wanted us to call him God, I think that He would have said to call Him Elohim, or if we were to use LORD He would have said Adonai. If that were the case then God or Lord would be the correct translation. There is nothing in scripture to give man the right to take out His name in His book and substitute it for "what" He is. YHWH is GOD!!! YHWH is His Holy name and Yahshua - meaning YHWH is salvation - is His Holy Son! The definition of Yahshua to me proves the Divinity of Christ and upholds the Trinity.

In Christ,
Deborah

YHWH is just part of it -- we don't have the vowels so we don't know the whole name. How can you say this is the name when we don't know what it really is?

Also, he was talking to Moses; this was not a command to us to call him that name. There is nothing in the OT or the NT that tells us there is only one name to use for God. In fact, if Jesus said we could call God "Abba", why don't you think that's okay? Jesus called God "Father," and when he taught his disciples to pray, addressed God as "Father" not "YHWH."

mesly asked:

If its an honest update (which I have no reason to doubt)

This "honest" translation "restores" the Hebrew names of God and Jesus to the Greek New Testament. It is obvious that their translation efforts are driven by their peculiar theology, not any honest desire to accurately translate the text.

And Elohim said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, YHWH, Elohim of your fathers, the Elohim of Abraham, the Elohim of Isaac, and the Elohim of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations. Exodus 3:15

Notice it says "the Elohim". Hmmmm? I do know for a fact YHWH is mentioned in the KJV OT. As far as not knowing how to pronounce it, why can't you go by the general vocabulary rules of that time, ie. how they pronounced words without vowels. From what I gather, that is where people who study ancient Hebrew came up with "Yahweh" as the probable pronounciation.

**** I do think it is more than okay!!!!! I have not stated that I didn't. Please don't put words in my mouth. I would never take away anything from Him or His word.

Marcia said: Jesus called God "Father," and when he taught his disciples to pray, addressed God as "Father"

I use "Father" when I pray everyday, because He is my Heavenly Father!!!!

Look, I am just looking into this matter as I feel compelled by the Holy Spirit to do so, and my own personal study. I just wanted to see what other people's opinion of this was. I am not trying to change how you or I pray or anything like that. Nor am I trying to change anyone's point of view. It seems like people are quick to attack here or get offended. If I offended anyone by just inquiring about this matter, I'm sorry.

And that is a good thing, doing it in this 'snakepit', may have been a less than inspired choiche but it is certainly an understandable one. Still you do now have several nice editions of the Bible you can look into. All of them can be found in many secondhand bookstores.

It's the Atheist Bulgarian bricklayer syndrome Craig.
Many around here claim to be wellschooled saved American baptist pastors. Often they seem to display the knowledge to back this up. That doesn't change the fact that they could very well be Atheist Bulgarian bricklayers with a peculiar hobby (pretending to be wellschooled saved American baptist pastors on an internet forum).
So as long as the topic is the literary quality of English language versions of the Bible, the opinion of mrs. van Veen my old English teacher holds more weight to me than (for example) your view.

Exactly !

I have a book titled 'Two Hundred and Eighty Titles and Symbols for Christ'.

Certain of my people called Him 'Bathala' years before a Portuguese sailor named Ferdinand Magellan 'discoved' the Philippines, and they knew He was the Creator of all things.

It always amazes me how Christians (English-speaking) get hung-up over the proper “name” for “The Name”, as if there is a certain combination of proper letters or prescribed pronunciation to be used. I think all He requires is that we do call on Him and that our words, thoughts and prayers honor Who and What He is.

My observation is that generally the various names used in the Bible are descriptions or phrases expressing a relationship (i.e. “Lord of Hosts”, “Most high God”, “Savoir”, “Redeemer”, “Father”, etc).

One all-encompassing word is “Creator”, which, for me, sums up all descriptions.

Thus, one could say “My Father, the Creator”.

Yeah, it probably won’t “catch on”, but I like it and it serves the purpose.

Very true. If scripture tells is anything (see Moses & burning bush), it tells us that God doesn't have a name. We forget that phrases like Adonai Elohim" etc, are Hebrew words for "Almighty One", "All-knowing One", "The One Who Is", and the list goes on. If memory serves correctly, I remember reading about the word Yahweh actually coming from an Egyptian phrase which means "who is". I'd have to look that one up.

But, to sum it up, what matters is that we call upon Him, and not what we call Him.

Sorry, I couldn't resist! ;)
Since this is what Arab-speaking Christians and Jews say, one should not have an automatic negative reaction to it.
