It is what none of us actually read but rather assumed that led to Lott's demise... actually, it was his own lack of a backbone.
This is simply a case of you reading between the lines. Granted, Lott acted like a guilty man but Thurmond stood for alot more than segregation. While you may argue that this was his distinctive trademark, you have no right to assume that Lott was referring to segregation.To uphold a segregationist as the solution to many of the problems of today is unthinkable.
