Tribute to Peter Jennings

I've been told that he was a good guy and I'll buy that.

But I don't believe that I'll ever forget his calling President Bush a coward after 9/11 because the Secret Service moved him to a secure location, as is dictated by protocol.

As for being a journalist, he lost all credibility as a jouranlist after the "Search For Jesus" hit piece.

 

Assuming this is offensive, we put much more "offensive" stuff on this board with little, if anything, said about it.

 

This is a sickening and disgusting post. Either way, it is too late for second guessing. Nor is it anyone's job to judge a person's relationship with God.

I didn't judge anything or anyone. I asked if he was saved. THEN, and only after the OPer said she didn't know, did I question why she would tell everyone Mr Jennings was in heaven. If it isn't our job to question one's salvation, then it sure can't be our job to state he's been redeemed.

In a 2004 interview on Larry King Live, Jennings explained the perspective of today's Christians toward the faith's durability over the years.

"If you are a true believer in the literal word of the gospels today, it comes as no surprise to you that this tiny little sect from the first century has survived now,Because it is the truth, it is the word, it is inevitable," he said. (Pretty powerful phraseology)


America has a religious dimension that needed coverage," he told Christianity Today last spring. "So we have done stories to cover the impact of religion, first by hiring Peggy Wehmeyer as a religion reporter who helped us appreciate this dimension of life better, then through these various specials designed to consider the religious dimension of what makes people act and think."

Wehmeyer was the first national religion correspondent for a major television network. She worked and studied at Dallas Theological Seminary and began her broadcasting career in the early 1980s at Dallas ABC affiliate WFAA-TV, creating the first religion beat in local television and winning various awards for her work.

He has done his part and have no problem honoring
him on this board.

 

The man was a powerful force on T.V. He ventured into several very dangerous places to do his job. He did his job very well, by all accounts. He led a very full life, and accomplished many great things, and was the recipient of several awards, not just in broadcasting. Pay tribute to all the things he did while down here, but don't post up some fluffy peice of fiction telling everyone God honored his life, and has a place prepared for him, in heaven, when we have zero proof he was saved.

I hated the tribute, and as far as I know, I'm still allowed to say that.

 

True. But I still don't think that the tribute was inappropriate. However, I don't think that you're required to have to like it or be devoid of concerns about it, either.

To those who are questioning whether or not Peter Jennings was a Christian, maybe this information will prove helpful. In the year 2000, Beliefnet.com's editor, Steven Waldman, interviewed Peter Jennings about the special, Search for Jesus. On Page 4 of the interview, Peter Jennings stated, "Well, first of all, I want to keep my own faith out of it because it's not relevant to the broadcast. I think it's fairly widely known by anybody who pays attention that I'm raised Anglican, I'm a practicing Christian, and that's about as far as I want to go with it because I would not want people to think that somehow I brought my own notion of faith or spirituality to bear on it."

During a speech at Harvard Divinity School, Peter Jennings stated that the overwhelming majority of newsrooms in America have an "appalling ignorance of religion and faith" and that was why he wanted relgion to be a beat at ABC. He further said, "Incidentally, though I do think it proper for journalists to keep their distance, I discovered there was a new spark to my own faith. I had been raised in a fairly predictable Anglican communion, where the practice of religion was, I am sorry to say, often as much social behaviour as it was spiritual. But today I find there is both comfort and challenge in practicing my faith, and though I am a dismal failure on many fronts, in trying to live it...my own faith has helped me to develop eyes that see the spiritual dimension in many stories. You can find a religious angle on every beat...politics...medical reporting...education...family and social issues...When it is done right, the added dimension of spirituality resonates with the audience to a suprrising degree."

Peter Jennings was a Christian who seemed to be humble and very well aware of his human failings.

If one's faith is genuine, it will produce works. I read that he did a lot of charitable work, even when the cameras were not on him. He also pushed for religion coverage on ABC when religion coverage was sorely lacking.

I believe God has a special place for Peter Jennings in Heaven.
