Troubling word

In a recent thread the word Zionist was used and apparently it was offensive.

I was greatly surprised that a word that signified the Israeli people's desire to return to the land God gave them, and that also was assigned to those of us who are supporters of this cause might be now considered inappropriate.

When did the word become an offensive term? If it is offensive, does it constitute some racism or some other derogatory slight?

Like other English words that changed meaning over time, I would more and more (as I got older) use some word or term only to hear twittering response from the younger folks who had redefined the word to some unrelated double meaning.

If someone would kindly point me in the right direction on the use of this word, I would appreciate it.

I expected the typical anti Israeli groups such as the Democrats, Muslims, and liberal Israeli's that oppose Zionism would use the word in some sneering fashion.

But what derogatory meaning did the world Zionism actually take on other than the typical scorn those (above listed) might imply by the use?

Why would a conservative Jew (for instance) that longs for life in the Land God gave them, be offended by the word Zionist - even if used as scornfully by those opposed?

Zionist entity (Arabic: الكيان الصهيوني‎, al-kayan al-Sahyūnī/Suhyūnī ) is a phrase used by Arabs] and Muslims as a pejorative for the State of Israel. Some commentators, including Getzel M. Cohen, have noted that many Arab and Palestinian spokespeople have stopped calling the State of Israel by its name and have reverted to the expression 'the Zionist entity'.

The term is described as a means of expressing hostility towards Israel, refusing to acknowledge its existence, and denying its legitimacy or right to exist. Virginia Q. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zionist_Regime

It is also a term used pejoratively by racist organizations like the Aryan Nation http://aryanism.net/politics/uniting-anti-zionists/

There are so-called Christian churches that mask their Aryan beliefs in a group called "Christian Identity" http://www.nizkor.org/hweb/orgs/american/christian-identity/religion-white-racists.html There are some churches that have even attempted to blend their racist views into a mainline denomination of "Community Church" and even some Baptist groups (Westboro).

Some Christian conspiracy theorists like Texx Marrs have also bordered some of these views but Marrs often puts the emphasis in it's PROPER place against the Jews that really ARE in cahoots with a global conspiracy.

A native Israelite has the same right to live and thrive in their own land as a US born citizen has a right to be an American even though it was not originally their land. Zionism was once a term that simply meant bringing the scattered of Israel back to our homeland, and defending our right to exist. Now it has taken on a pejorative [snipped].

The US is well known for its abuse, mistreatment, and enslavement of Blacks and Indians. Would it be right for me to infer that the term "American" means that all Americans are guilty of these crimes? Yet that's exactly how the term Zionist is used against myself and all Israeli's, and KY went so far as to refer to us as terrorists and claimed that Muslims learned their terrorism tactics from Jews.http://www.baptistboard.com/showpost.php?p=1988261&postcount=24

So yes, it has certainly evolved into an offensive term just as "N***" has been adopted as an offensive term against Blacks.

So what was it this loving Zionist called you a while ago, 'a self righteous dramaturge'?

Remember, the racist Klan and similar movements of the past century and a half targeted Jews/Zionists, Blacks and Catholics. Many also lumped the Irish in.

It was an "Anti" mentality, not a "Pro" mentality - people were simply against these minorities whom they blamed for much of the world's ills.

Hopefully, we've all grown beyond that (ask Paula Deen).

In 1960 they elected a Roman Catholic as President (Irish too)
In 2008 they elected a half-black as President

Oddly, though 48% of the $$ for the democrat party is from Jewish donors, No Jew has been elected President.

Of all the stigma still haunting the political scene, "Zionist" or "Pro-Israel" is still rampant. :(

You realize the Democrat party is 60% funded by Jews?

And let me guess, you are one of those deceived patriots that think there's a difference between Republicans and Democrats. It's a system based on false dichotomy where BOTH parties are involved in establishing a new world order. But the racists need someone else to blame it on so that they can give Americans hope that the Republican party can save the day, when the Republicans are working equally as hard to bamboozle you as the Dems are.

Blaming it on Jews actually helps them deflect attention from their global goals.

Thank you for the insightful post.

What word then is not offensive that represents what I support?

And for the record, had I used the word, I would definitely not have known it was inappropriate, and I do apologize that you or any Israeli would be offended should it be used on the BB in derogatory terms.

Perhaps a thread should be started in which various code words that are derogatory are explored.

I had the privilege of having met a few great Republicans. Frankly, I have yet to meet a great Democrat.

However, more to the point, there is no peace in the Devils playground. And humankind don't need an excuse to bolster their evil heart intents.

This post has been reported. I never used the term Zion or Zionist in any post. I am demanding that you cease and desist using my name in a false manner. And, since I already received an infraction for an insult towards you in a series of posts that you started, I am insisting that you be treated the same way, except that your post is a flat out lie.

I'm with you here on this SN. His behavior is out of control and he spreads some serious mistruths of others here almost perpetually. I'm sure the admins are on to it, or at least hope so.

Thanks for the statement. I called him something that I should not have a month ago, but was called on it. He actually started that round of back and forth posts, but that was no excuse for what I said.

I am hoping KYredneck and EWF will also chime in on this, as to my knowledge, neither has used the term Zion or Zionist in a racist way. In addition, he has been caught on more than one occasion red handed in plagiarism. No telling how many he was not caught doing. Really, it is time to put a stop to it.

Prove it then. With all the links you post for everything else about Calvin and other arguments, I'm sure if you had this massive evidence of plagiarism that you would have produced it by now. What I did on ONE POST was not plagiarism. Plagiarism is deliberately stealing an idea and MAINTAINING it as your own for some type of personal gain (such as monetary or reputation fame). I used a statement to prove someone was being deceitful, in the process, several other wrongfully labelled it plagiarism, and even said that I was blaspheming God. When HOS repeatedly asked for evidence of blasphemy, it was not produced.

Everything I that I have accused you and others of, I have provided the links and documentation for. You have not done so. SO put up or shut up.

And now on to the thread you ignored, where you claimed somewhere to be a THIRD CLASS PETTY OFFICER with an E-3 rank. Would love to hear an explanation for that one.

What a load of bunk here. You deliberately attempted to come across as if you had written out your own beliefs. In fact you stole it from a web site. As soon as I read it I knew there was no way on earth you could be that objective. You were called on it by me first and then others. You rambled back and forth about it for hours that same day and not until the next day did you come up with your fabricated, twisted and concocted story about why you did it.

You had to sleep on that one in order to devise some baloney story to try and cover your tail. All of this gives a glimpse as to your character.

One could scour your website and most likely find more of it there, but then you'd have to cover that with more mistruths.

Well considering that you received an infraction for using racist rhetoric, you have no room to complain about me labeling you as a racist. So what that it was a month ago, that's no different than you accusing me of plagiarism for over a month, at least I and others furnished evidence of it.

I posted the links where EWF and KY both used racist rhetoric, where EWF used Zionism against me as a pejorative term , and where KY stated that Jews were terrorist, and taught the Muslims how to be terrorists.

If I am infracted by defending my country against anti Semitic comments, then this issue will be addressed in a different manner on a different type of venue.

That is a lie and you know it. I stated the very next post why I did what I did after Icon and one other poster fell for it. It worked. The difference is I ADMITTED that I used a different source.

Use your brain. I'm not a Calvinist so why would I want to quote a Calvinist source as my own?? What possible motive could a person that disdains Calvinism have for "plagiarizing" a statement about TULIP from one of their own websites? The reason I did it is OBVIOUS just the way I explained it.

And why do you keep making all of these accusations about "other mistruths"? If you have them, then DO IT and quit yapping about it. You are making false accusations with no support, you were the one that started saying I was a blasphemer without providing any evidence whatsoever, and yet you and you ilk want to go to the mods every time I say something you don't like. You did the same thing to HOS.

It's pathetic that you call yourselves Christians, and try to silence those who aggressively argue against your view points. You act just like the Pharisees that tried to silence Jesus and the apostles. You act like the same caricature you paint of others who disagree with you, and act like your stuff don't stink.
