Trump says US hasn’t ‘abandoned’ Kurds despite pulling troops out of Syria

President Trump on Tuesday defended Washington’s relationship with Turkey and said the US has not “abandoned” its Kurdish allies — a day after he drew a bipartisan backlash for deciding to withdraw troops from northern Syria.

“We may be in the process of leaving Syria, but in no way have we Abandoned the Kurds, who are special people and wonderful fighters,” the president said in a series of tweets.

“Likewise our relationship with Turkey, a NATO and Trading partner, has been very good,” he continued.

“Turkey already has a large Kurdish population and fully understands that while we only had 50 soldiers remaining in that section of Syria, and they have been removed, any unforced or unnecessary fighting by Turkey will be devastating to their economy and to their very fragile currency. We are helping the Kurds financially/weapons!” he said.

I haven't decided how I feel about Pulling out but I did want to wait until I could see if there was more info on this. As it turns out there is. We are still supplying the Kurds. It is possible we might give air support from what I heard on the radio. We have puled our troops out. Truth is we cannot afford to be there or even help. My concern is that leaving our allies in a lurch will make it hard to build allies in the future. We do have a habit of doing that.

All that being said, to use the word "abandoned" seems to be completely incorrect. People gig Trump all the time for exaggerating things I would think they need to be careful themselves.

The news is reporting the prisons holding ISIS detainees are being attacked by Turkish forces. If this keeps up there will be prison breaks. I'm with Lindsay Graham on this one. We protect our allies and kill ISIS. Turkey seems insane and ruled by an Islamist strong man that imprisoned Christian missionaries.

We should pull out of Germany to save money. Trump should change out military thinking to maximum force/minimum time. He should have made more provisions for the Kurds. I doubt if he can bully Turkey over money if the Turks can see a way to wipe out the Kurds. Trump has not pushed hard enough for domestic spending cuts.

If you call an Iranian Muslim a Kurd, neocons go gaga over them as wonderful people. You call a Kurd an Iranian Muslim, neocons start wedding themselves in fear of being nuked.

According to him the provisions have not stopped

Well, the Turks have invaded. Let's kick them out of NATO & stop giving them money for not sending Muslims to Europe. Let's use NATO to repel Muslim invaders of Europe. Let's close down our German bases and help the Kurds. No one wants to fight for a Germany that refuses to fund their own defense. Merkel is a female Obama.

Shoostie, Kurds are a separate branch from the main Iranian group. Most notably (from the wiki Kurds article) the majority of Kurds belong to the Shafi‘i school of Sunni Islam. While Teheran has no doubt fingers in the pie, they are not the Kurd's best buddies.

Upend a Government. Destabilize region. Walk away from a mess you helped create. We being serious here?

Yes, the US Iraq war was 100% a crime against Iraq and humanity. If we did the Iraqi people a favor, as the dogs of war insist, then we owe Iraqi's nothing and can walk away anytime. In any case, we've been "nation building" for well over a decade, do we ever get to leave?

But, the Kurds vs. Turkey thing has nothing to do with America, nor America's attack on Iraq. The Kurds are terrorists who have been attacking Iraq and Turkey long before the Iraq war. The US occupation of Iraq just caused the Kurd vs. Turkey fighting to pause.
