President Donald Trump's chief strategist Steve Bannon has been fired, two White House officials told CNN Friday.

A source told CNN that Bannon was given the option to resign but was forced out. White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders confirmed Bannon's departure but did not say whether he was fired or resigned.
"White House Chief of Staff John Kelly and Steve Bannon have mutually agreed today would be Steve's last day. We are grateful for his service and wish him the best," Sanders said in a statement.
The President has privately stewed over Bannon in recent days, including Thursday night from his golf course in New Jersey. He was furious with his chief strategist after he was quoted in an interview with the American Prospect contradicting him on North Korea and asserting that he was able to make personnel changes at the State Department.
Bannon's exit comes just seven months after Trump took office and three weeks after retired Gen. John Kelly took over as chief of staff, looking to instill order in a chaotic White House beset by internal divisions, staff infighting and a storm of controversies.
Bannon's exit meant one of the White House's most controversial staffers, the man generally perceived as the driving force behind Trump's "nationalist" ideology, would no longer be at the center of the Trump universe.

Good, he was known (or so I read) as a thorn in President Trump's side anyway.

Bannon says that he once confidently believed in the prospect of success for that version of the Trump presidency he now says is over. Asked what the turning point was, he says, “It’s the Republican establishment. The Republican establishment has no interest in Trump’s success on this. They’re not populists, they’re not nationalists, they had no interest in his program. Zero. It was a half-hearted attempt at Obamacare reform, it was no interest really on the infrastructure, they’ll do a very standard Republican version of taxes.....

Judging by the amount of leadership and interest Trump took in his own agenda I'd say he has no interest in its success. A couple of tweets a day is not leadership.

Bannon, if he has a mind to, and if Trump does follow Bannon's agenda/strategy, may be able to help Trump more from outside the White House than inside.

However, if Trump moves toward the middle Bannon will be a huge problem for Trump.

It is going to be interesting to see what happens.

I noticed that FreeRepublic (Trump central) has been in meltdown over this. Some have gone to serious spin to keep the locals at bay and on the ranch.

Wait until Trump proves to be too liberal for Bannon (or not conservative enough, take your pick.)

President Trump unleashed on his former chief strategist and campaign manager Wednesday, issuing a long and unusual statement questioning Stephen K. Bannon's mental stability, honesty and political influence.

"Steve Bannon has nothing to do with me or my Presidency. When he was fired, he not only lost his job, he lost his mind. Steve was a staffer who worked for me after I had already won the nomination by defeating seventeen candidates, often described as the most talented field ever assembled in the Republican party."

Trump continued, "Now that he is on his own, Steve is learning that winning isn't as easy as I make it look. Steve had very little to do with our historic victory, which was delivered by the forgotten men and women of this country. Yet Steve had everything to do with the loss of a Senate seat in Alabama held for more than thirty years by Republicans. Steve doesn't represent my base — he's only in it for himself."

Trump created a monster and now he is poking the monster.

Trump: "My chief campaign adviser in the stretch run to the election and also my first chief White House strategist is insane."

He didn't say Bannon was insane then, he "lost his mind" after he left the Trump administration. I think Trump is mad at him because Bannon called Trump's son "treasonous", at least in that hatchet-job of a book and Steve has not denied saying that yet.

Read Trump’s Reaction to Steve Bannon’s Comments

and Trump is wrong to blame Bannon for the loss of Roy Moore. Moore appointed his own wife as campaign manager and went on vacation the week of the election. Moore's own fault.
