Trump's Real Problem

In the 1950's sitcom "The Honeymooners", Ralph Kramden had a penchant for getting in trouble for things he said. He would then bellow at the top of his lungs, "I've got a BIIIIIIG mouth!" Donald Trump and Ralph Kramden have a lot in common.

Donald Trump's problem is not his policy positions. He kept his word on the Supreme Court and is moving in the right for direction on immigration. He's making progress on rolling back regulations. He's reversing the decline in our military readiness. These are all good things. Unfortunately, Donald Trump has a big mouth. He doesn't think of the consequences of his words. The recent controversy about the events in Charlottesville is case in point. He should have known that his political enemies would pounce on any misstatements. He played right into their hands. Every President needs political allies. Trump's are ducking for cover. This is not a good thing. Trump may effectively become a lame duck before his first year is up.

His original statement was appropriate and lacking nothing. The fact that political enemies are jumping on them does not prove he could have or should have done better.

His original statement was not incorrect, it was lacking. Had he only condemned the white supremacist who rammed his car into the crowd, that criticism would have been a blip. He then could have discussed the larger issue of what happened in Charlottesville at his next news conference. He missed that opportunity.

Listen, I don't think Trump is any more a racist than the average person. I think he's a loose cannon with his tweets and his mouth and his aides are afraid to say anything to him.

His candidacy was kind of a backlash against the political class. You know, the kind of pols who poll 3 different focus groups before making a statement, to see what the "optics" are.

Those kind of politicians are the opposite side of the same coin. Trump took advantage of that. Trump won because he was able to appeal to disaffected voters in both parties. He will not have that same attraction in 2020. Being a bully will only get you so far. You see what happened with the Senate and the repeal of ObamaCare. McCain told Trump to pound salt. Now Trump is losing allies in both houses and business execs are turning their back on him. This is going to have the effect of isolating the president. Trump has never shown the ability or willingness to extend an olive branch. He is likely to double and even triple down on his rhetoric, effectively isolating himself even more. Imagine what the man could do if he learned how to keep his mouth shut and his fingers off of his Twitter account.

Let me clarify my position on Trump. I do not think Trump was wrong it what he said. I think Trump could have done better and muted the huge distraction that followed. The media hates Trump. The Left hates Trump. Some Republicans hate Trump. He has adversaries on all sides. Now, he may relish all that opposition. In fact, it probably feeds his ego. Unfortunately, the President has work to do, and he cannot spend his time feeding all this nonsense. ObamaCare is still a travesty and needs to be repealed. The economy is fragile. Tax reform is high up on the agenda. The President needs Congress to push through his agenda. Congress will not acquiesce to the President's demands if they think the electorate considers the President toxic. After all, 2018 is an election year. The real question is whether President Trump can be muzzled, for his own good and the good of the American people.

It was not lacking. The left broke the law and turned the rally violent.

It was lacking. It was technically correct but ill advised. The fall out from his speech created an unneeded distraction. Time is not the President's ally. There is only so much time he can waste.

No matter what Trump says or does the Democrats will attack him daily just as they do on this message board. Madonna said on inauguration day that she wanted to burn the White House down or blow it up. She is like the Brits in 1814, you see.
