This is a spin-off thread from the TV Detectives thread.

Pick your favorite one.

Mine happens to be Dirty Harry. Of course, its either him or Sheriff Roscoe P. Coltrane from the Dukes of Hazzard.

No Joe Friday or Steve McGarrett? I think "Other" will win this one, unless 2/3 of voters are less than 35.

I don't think you can compare Dirty Harry to Frank Drebin. The Naked Gun was never meant to be anything but a spoof of, well, anything it could get its hands on. Dirty Harry was meant to be a more realistic portrayal of police.

I agree with Amy that McClain was the best movie cop, with Harry Callahan a close 2nd. The action in Live Free or Die Hard got a little over the top, such as the fighter vs. the semi, and jumping out of a speeding vehicle. OTOH, Die Hard had the scene where McClain somehow caught himself by his fingertips before plummeting to a sure death in the ventilation ducts. In fact, that's the only part of Die Hard that annoys me, because I think they should have reshot that stunt until they got it right.

I wanted to throw him in there because he's just funny. I didn't catch it until I watched Dirty Harry, but when Frank Drebon said, "When I see five guys dressed in togas in the park stabbing a man, I shoot him that's my policy." It was supposed to be making fun of a line that Harry Callahan said in the first Dirty Harry movie.

The best tv cop was Sonny Crockett of Miami Vice. You live on a sailboat, never wear a tie, and wear boat shoes with no socks.
