AT 12:00:01 this Sat morning Big Diomede will be cellebrating the New Year of 2022. Yet, just a mere 2 miles to the west, it will only be 1 am on Friday morning - Dec 31 at Little Diomede. While it will be 1 AM in Little Diomede, it will be 3 AM in Calif and 6 am in NY City and 12 noon in London, England.

(at least I think I got the times right!)

The halfway point between the two islands was known as the "Ice Curtain".

When I was flying long haul, I kept trying to figure out how I could use to my advantage the foreknowledge of what's coming. ;)

e.g. launch from Tokyo at 1100 on Tuesday morning ... arrive DFW at 0930 on Tuesday morning. :Cool

While I never could figure it out - I would leave the States at 0015 hours - and get to Rhein-Main AFB at 1730 hours - which is 17 hours

But going back to CONUS - I would leave noon and arrive at McQuire AFB/Ft Dix at 1400 hrs - only 2 hours!! Must be the tail wind.

LOL ... actually the tail wind is generally west to east.

I pushed a 100 knot headwind last night BWI-DFW. tiresome.

I saw the sun set TWICE in one flight. This time of year, left LHR for DFW midafternoon. flew well north. I dont' recall the precise latitude, but def great circle, and "tacked" the big headwinds to reduce the hit on groundspeed.

Anyhow, the sun set during my "shift" in the right seat. When I took my break, the sun rose in the west ... so it was up again when I returned to the cockpit. Saw it set again before we landed DFW.

:)

I remember flying to Germany - we were probably over Nova Scota.
(maybe 2 hours into the flight from Ft Dix)
looked out the left window - total darkness
looked out the right window - you could see the sun rising
then just in a few hours darkness again - (this was in late Nov)

Then there are state lines which demarc standard time vice DSL.

and even counties within a state.

try doing a layover the night of time change in a zone away from home …

“when is pickup time? What time is it now? What time will it be in 10 hours from now?”
