Let me answer this from the point of view of a candidate.

Two years ago I ran for state assembly. I went to several meetings for candidates night. Only a handful of people showed up at these neighborhood meetings. As voters, we need to get involved! Ask questions, send letters, be involved. I realize you can not be on top of all levels of government. So concentrate on one level and learn all you can. Personally, my niche is state government. I spoke to my next door neighbor tonight, and I may have convinced him to run for city council or school board next year. Also get involved in your political party. There is much we can do, within the establishment. We should not condem the party until we have tried to work within the system.

Ps, I am running again for state asy. Thrs evening I will be going to a candidates night at the local Christian High school. It will be interesting to see how many show up.

You are absolutely correct, here, DeeJay. Although "hundreds" probably is a generous guess, and the real number is more like a hundred or so, give or take twenty-five. But there are several, including two fairly large ones, the Liberal and Conservative parties who do often have candidates who are elected in the state of NY, either singly or in combination with one or more other parties. Congressman Bernie Sanders of Vermont, a self-proclaimed Socialist was elected and holds office under the label of Independent; Joe Lieberman of Connecticut is currently running for the Senate under the label of the Connecticut for Lieberman Party; and Jesse Ventura was elected Governor of Minnesota under the label of the Reform Party, a few years back. So one can be elected who is not a member of either the Democrat or Republican party.

Personally, I'd like to see a serious resurrection of, among others, the Whigs, Populists, Progressives, Constitutional Union, and American Parties of the 19th Century. And even more, I'd like to see an individual with the perceived stature of an Henry Clay, elected Speaker of the House, even when his or her party is in the minority, and by a fair number, one time, as was Clay.

"How do I feel about public education?"

Well I feel that public education passes kids along with only the bare minimum of education to get by. I feel that I struggle with spelling and grammer because I did not care when I was a kid and neither did my teachers.

I have placed my daughter in private school so she can avoid being graded when she postes messages on the internet.

I do get in a hurry and forget to read through my posts to catch the more obvious mistakes.

The Libertarian Party has a lot of good points. They also have a lot of bad points that need to be re-thought if they want to be electable.

PS. I am a good reader and I love history and I can verbaly communicate just fine. It is only spelling and rithmatic that I fail at and a C- is better then I got in school. So I see some improvement.

Salty, you are 100% right. The apathy of politics is rampant in this country, and to an extent, that has allowed the two parties to become the self serving, power hungry organizations that they are. I think the highest percentage in my lifetime of an election is 1960 when Kennedy ran against Nixon, probably around 60%, and that is of registered voters. There are just as many out there that could register.

Between those who have not registered, those who do not vote, and those that are disquisted with both parties, there is enough votes out there to make democrats and republicans a faded memory. It just takes the proper leadership to inspire.

  However, FTR, 'Spell-checker' will catch the majority of these, unless one forgets to turn it on.
