US accused of 'occupying' Haiti as troops flood in

France accused the US of "occupying" Haiti on Monday as thousands of American troops flooded into the country to take charge of aid efforts and security.

The French minister in charge of humanitarian relief called on the UN to "clarify" the American role amid claims the military build up was hampering aid efforts.

Alain Joyandet admitted he had been involved in a scuffle with a US commander in the airport's control tower over the flight plan for a French evacuation flight.

There is a simple solution. Have France sign off on a plan that makes them totally responsible for relief efforts and bring our troops and supplies home.

Wonder how they'd react?

If France wants to take over the relief operations, let 'em. I'm not holding my breath that they'd accept that challenge.

No matter what is intended..... when the military show up, it is a 'show of force' even if it is not exercised.

In a disaster such as this..... let me see civilian or relief dressed personnel any day over the military.

Ok, so the whole world thinks that the U.S. should be saving Haiti and are even complaining that we are not doing enough...

...but they don't like the clothes that the rescuers are wearing?

That's pretty much what happens whenever we provide aide to a foreign country. That's just sinful human nature. We shouldn't let other peoples' sinful human nature preclude us from extending a humanitarian hand wherever we deem appropriate for us to do so.

The US is held to an impossible double standard on this stuff.

On one hand we are accused of not helping enough

On the other hand we are accused of helping too much...

We'd ask the French to help, but they'd promptly surrender to the next aftershock...
