UK General Election

As if we hadn't had enough of politics in this country...Prime Minister Theresa May has called a snap General Election for 8th June. She is highly likely to win with an increased majority....which is kind of why she's done it: the Opposition parties are split five ways, with Labour in particular in disarray under Jeremy Corbyn's hard-left leadership. I would also guess that she would use her increased Parliamentary majority to angle for a hard Brexit.

You think you've had a wearying political process? In the early 1930's there were many elections in Germany.

March and April: 1932 Presidential election (two rounds)

July 1932: Reichstag elections

November 1932: Reichstag elections

March 1933: Reichstag elections (roughly one month after Hitler was appointed Chancellor, and after months of Brownshirt terror against opposition parties and six days after Nazi's set fire to the Reichstag building, blaming it on Communists.)

August 1934: Referendum consolidating Germany's office of President and Germany's office of Chancellor into one office--The Fuhrer.

The next election in Germany would not occur until 1949.

I would also guess that she would use her increased Parliamentary majority to angle for a hard Brexit.

Jeremy Corbyn is the most sensible & honest leader in Parliament.
Last year I joined the Labour party - I've never before joined a party, though I have voted at most of the elections.
I've also joined Momentum, that was formed to support Corbyn.

Conservatives have significantly failed to manage the British economy, running up ever increasing deficits, while allowing the multinationals & the very rich tax concessions & reducing benefits for the sick & needy. They've money for war, but not for the poor.

The poor are poor because there is no way for them to earn a living. The big employers have switched their purchasing from British manufacturers to cheap foreign imports.

We need a strong Corbyn-led Labour government working on Socialist principles. The Blairites should rally behind our Labour leader. They had their day.

I just fear that Corbyn is too far to the fringe to win votes.

It's always interesting to watch how the parliamentary system works.

It's partly to do with the Conservatives' lead in the opinion polls ie: why not? But it is also partly to do with the timing of the Brexit negotiations: TM doesn't want to be trying to finalise the small print of the Brexit deal in two years' time whilst half looking over her shoulder at a General Election in 2020. If she gets this out of the way now, she doesn't have to hold another GE until 2022.
