The Bilderbergers are a boogeyman that it seems some people on the Extreme Right(and some with a gloom-and-doom eschatology) claim in their rants control EVERYTHING that goes on in the world - economically and politically. I became familiar with them when I subscribed to the old Extreme Right publication, "The Spotlight".

After subscribing for a while and not seeing any of the things that they claimed were going to happen actually happening, I did not resubscribe.

 

Yeah they meet secretly (well, not so secret anymore) once a year to discuss vacation plans over tea and crumpets.

I thought something like that too. Kind of like a recycled "Big Mac".

This oil thing is serious. Not only does the price of gasoline escalate, but also the prices of every thing which comes out of the oil patch goes up accordingly. All our plastic junk which we buy from overseas is going to cost more--domestic plastic stuff too. The cost of getting the plastic junk to Walmart is going up too. We live in a plastic world.

Are we headed for inflation like we have never seen? Maybe.

If oil is truly short then the best possible thing that could happen is high prices that will promote alternatives like ethanol.

Someone will have to play that political card soon. I suspect one side or the other will support manditory use of fuels with a higher percentage of ethanol. I think Missouri (GOP legislature and governor) are already moving in that direction for 10% ethanol.

I have personally been willing for some time to pay more for fuel that will profit American farmers instead of OPEC and friends.

 

Gasohol should be selling half a buck below gas but I bet it isn't. Any corn staters out there to report?

The price of futures only matters to the people who buy and sell futures and has little to do with retail cost. A buyer of $90/bbl Dec oil will lose money if the consumer decides he is not willing to pay over $2.50/gal for gas.

As long as new 15 MPG cars are selling we don't know what Americans are willing to pay. I'm willing to pay $3.00 before I consider changing my life activities.

 

The consumers often don't have a choice.

When I was in high school, gas was 50 cents a gallon. As it neared $1.00, we all swore we would stop driving if it passed $1.00 a gallon, but when it came down to it - - - the life and times of living in walking distance of your office passed many of us by years ago.

I have a "short commute" to the office, but I pondered 'walking' recently when I had car trouble. It wasn't a realistic pondering. Fifteen miles in and fifteen miles out, and not a "straight line" possible in the whole thing due to playa lakes, fenced off fields, etc., in the way.

Biking in my city is suicidal.

I'm actually more likely to be able to do it than friends in larger cities though. Imagine trying to walk to work in Dallas, Texas or Houston, Texas or Los Angelos, California.

 

My wife and I were just talking about that.

Ethanol increases have not mirrored gas increases. The 10% blend shoud be something more than $.20 cheaper. We're probably getting gouged.

Amen! It's a pity to work 70-90 hours a week, and reap poverty wages. The entire basis of civilization is agriculture, and the answer to our energy problems are to be found there also. Perhaps we should not plant our crops for one year, and watch the consumer become educated on how valuable our services really are!

 

Before WW2 half of all Americans worked in some sort of food production and now it is less than 10%. Back then half of all Americans lived in poverty and spent half of their life's energy getting enough food to stay alive.

Fact is that the productivity of the food industru has increased by 90% or more and there are still to many farmers as evidenced by low food prices - as commodities and on the shelf. We could cut our food expenses by not buying prepared foods and eating out but we are probably spending less than 5% of gross income on food right now (no kids at home <G&gt.

Read someplace that the average home owner spends a rediculous amoount on his lawn ($250/year?) If he put that time and money into growing veggies in front of his house . . . nothing [snip - inappropriate contextual usage] (see Strong's) me off more than seeing well paid govt employees mowing lawns at welfare housing projects. The slugs should be growing potatos instead of watching the soaps.
