Most too illiterate to pronounce "Maranatha" much less know its meaning.

In its first football season (1971?) I was a proud alum and pastoring in Michigan. Heard Walter Cronkite signing off CBS news with a story of "Mare antha" college in Wisconsin. He said if you think YOU are having a bad day, this school's first game, down 66-0 and called in 3rd quarter on account of darkness. He added there is only the way "up" from there!!
My son (a fellow grad) was in my office and we laughed out when we read this. He pointed out that the score remains a record.

Whitman College No Longer the Missionaries

Missionary mascot rejected as 'noninclusive,' 'imperialistic,' and 'not very intimidating'.

"The college's sports teams will now be known as the Blues, the school said Thursday."

"The other finalists were the Appaloosas, the Blue Ravens and the Sockeyes, which is a kind of fish."

Maranatha Baptist, no longer Crusaders, are now the 'Sabercats'.

Anyone have a suggestion for an appropriate new mascot for this Baptist school?

Well now that we have rid the world of that mascott all is right in the world and everyone can now go about their business. For crying out loud people need to get a life and find something real to worry about.

Why aren't the Arizona State "Sun Devils" considered offensive? Are those the 'right' kind of devils, or what?

College embraces Crusaders name despite protests that it's potentially offensive to Muslims:

Sports name stays after weekslong review
The College of the Holy Cross is keeping its century-old sports name “the Crusaders” after eight weeks of campus reflection amid concerns the name could offend Muslims. The Worcester college’s board of trustees voted yesterday to keep the name
The issue was raised in a 2016 report compiled by a campus committee charged with examining the sports name....Over the eight weeks of campus input, a working group created last fall received more than 1,800 responses and held two public forums.
