University of Cincinnati cop Ray Tensing indicted on murder charge for killing Samuel DuBose during traffic stop
The University of Cincinnati cop who killed a driver during a traffic stop over a missing front license plate will be charged with murder.
Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters ripped into Officer Ray Tensing as he announced the grand jury indictment against the cop during a Wednesday press conference.
“This is the most asinine act I've ever seen,” he said of the shooting. “This does not happen in the United States.”
Tensing shot and killed Samuel DuBose on July 19 after the officer pulled him over near the university campus for a missing front license plate.
In a police report, Tensing said he was “dragged” by DuBose, forcing him to shoot.
But Deters said video from the stop showed no such thing: instead DuBose slowly pulled away from the stop, and Tensing "fell backward after he shot (DuBose) in the head," the prosecutor said.
Tensing overreacted and "purposely killed" DuBose, Deters said, adding that the cop "should have never been a police officer."
“He wasn't dealing with someone who was wanted for murder. He was dealing with someone who didn't have a front license plate,” he said.
A warrent has been issued for the cop's arrest. If convicted, he could face life in prison.
Earlier on Wednesday, Tensing's attorney Stewart Mathews said the grand jury indictment was likely “given the political climate.” But Mathews said given the evidence he's seen, he doesn't believe there should be an indictment.
Body-camera video of the shooting was also released Wednesday. DuBose's family had been pressing for its release.

Just a shame. Over a license plate. The senseless murder of unarmed black people by police continues. And folks wonder why so many doubt the suicide of Sandra Bland.
