I wonder if Southerners despise the name of "Yankees"
Wait - if "Yankees" is oppressive - then should they be made to change their name?

Why not? They were the Highlanders before they had to play in the Polo Grounds, no longer so 'high' as in their downtown stadium, Hilltop Park. And this was after they were the Baltimore Orioles, that scrapping, brawling team of John McGraw, Wee Willie Keeler, King Kelly, et al. But Ban Johnson, who by 1901 virtually ruled professional baseball, decided his American League needed a team in New York, and worked behind the scenes to move them there-- in comparable fashion to how the NFL Colts deserted Baltimore one night for Indianapolis in 1984.
