I found this info on a web page;

"How many lives do seatbelts kill?
In 2019, nearly half of passenger vehicle occupants who died in crashes were unrestrained. From 1975 through 2017, seat belts have saved an estimated 374,196 lives."

Boy that is amazing -- but suppose the article was written this way:

"In 2019 - OVER half of passengers vehicles occupants who died in crashes WERE wearing seatbelts"

Now what I wrote is 100% truthful, but from the article - it was written to "prove" the "you need to wear seatbelts" point of view.

Now, it makes no difference what the subject is - politics, law, religion, education, even seatblets ect - it is very easy to persuade others to a certain course of action, by HOW we say something.

So the next time you read an article or see a news report - well just keep in mind - its all how it is said.

The greater half or the lesser half? So did more or less people die wearing seat belts? As worded it is not clear. Wow.

I understand what you are saying, but the logic fails. The question is trying to determine how many people survived similar accidents by wearing seatbelts. Did the seatbelt make the difference?

My favorite use of stats was by Rush Limbaugh who regularly stated his show had under gone an “opinion audit” that determined he was almost always right 98.6% of the time.

The phrase literally means nothing, but it drove people nuts because they didn’t recognize the joke.

peace to you

1) the 98.6% of Rush had no stat back up - it was just hype for his show.
2) The point is that seat belts do NOT guarantee surviving a crash. Do they help - of course
There have been instances where a seatbelt has caused the death of a person.
BUT overall, your chances are much better when a person is belted.

Years ago - there was a PSA where a State trooper - stated that in his 20 years on the force, that he never
unbuckled a body after a car collision. Later, I read that (at least in that state) a LEO was not permitted to unbuckle a body - they had to wait on medical personal......

I never heard anyone claim a seatbelt guaranteed survival of a car crash.

Interesting story about the trooper.

I never heard anyone claim a seatbelt guaranteed survival of a car crash. ...

They don't come out and say it - but in a sense - that is what they are implying.

When I became a car salesman - we went though a 40 our classroom course -
The implication was that everyone who walks in will buy a car.
well, many didn't - granted the instructor never said that - but that was the general implication.

"Its not what you say that counts - its what you don't say that doesn't count - that's what counts."

I started wearing a seat belt long before it became law. I worked for the SC DOT starting in '65, & had many occasions to see Hwy Pat cars that had been involved in some serious wrecks.
In most cases the vehicle did not look as if anyone could have survived, but I learned that in many cases the Trooper sustained a broken arm, leg rib etc , but nothing life threatening.
And this was back when all there was was a lap belt - no shoulder restraint.
I became an avid seatbelt proponent before "wearing belts was cool.:Laugh"

I never took it as other than you increase your chances to survive a bad accident. Some accidents are so bad, the chances of survival are very slim no matter if a seatbelt is worn.

peace to you
