Supreme Court Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy will retire from the highest U.S. court, giving President Donald Trump another chance to fundamentally reshape the top of the judiciary.

In a statement, the Supreme Court said the 80-year-old Kennedy will step down effective July 31. The judge called it "the greatest honor and privilege to serve our nation in the federal judiciary for 43 years, 30 of those years in the Supreme Court." Kennedy wants to spend more time with his family, even though they were content with him staying on the court.

He also sent a letter to Trump on Wednesday notifying the president of his decision.

Do you think the dems will say Trump cannot make a nomination due to the mueller investigation?

No, I think they will say there shouldn't be any nominations in an election year. That's the excuse McConnell used. Of course the difference is that this election year is not for the Presidency. Also, the Dems are the minority party in the Senate, as they were in 2016.

Well the Mueller investigation still wouldn't mean the President isn't without authority right...or to give his nomination?

I heard someone else suggest that but it sounds plausible to me. It is in fact how libbies think. Any excuse they can find.

Wow! This is huge. This is a possible turning point for our nation, having just crossed the 60 Million abortions mark since RvW.

Just wow. We are in for a spiritual battle like we've not seen in some time. Kennedy, while conservative on many things, swings to the left of abortion and marriage. We are on the verge of having the first pro-life court in more than 45 years.

This is from God. It's a chance for our nation to right the biggest wrong of its existence. I love my country, but we have murdered the innocent like no other nation his history. It needs to stop. We now have a chance to strike a blow to this barbarism. Will the Church stand seize this moment? Or it continue to go the way of the world?

It would be nice to see him nominate a conservative Black/Latino to the Court, as that wouyld make libs /dems even more in a boil!

See, this is why I've long thought neverTrumpers were wrong and should be ignored - if they had had their way (like what happened in Alabama), more Republicans would have stayed home, and you would have had Hillary appointing someone for this and for Gorsuch's seat.

Let them meltdown, they are the ones that changed the rules and now Trump can get through anybody he wants to.

Yes, but make sure they are relatively young.

Really wasn't surprised, Kennedy wanted out for years - he was "rumored" to be retiring every summer, don't know why he didn't last year.

Thomas doesn't want to die while still on SCOTUS, he could be next. Sotomayor and Ginsberg are both not well, and Ruth just hates being the dissent and may quit for that reason soon.

We'll see. I think you're going to see a spiritual battle like we've not seen in many decades. It's going to get darker before the light.

Baloney.

Now is the time to appoint someone that adheres to the constitution. That should be the only litmus test. Race or sex should play no part in the decision. That's a left wing politically correct tactic.

And how Christians handle this obvious opportunity for morality, IMHO, will be a very strong factor whether God grants this nation a temporary pass on His judgment.

Lets not get so suckered in by the liberal screeching to the "politics" of this that we forget who is the REAL villain!!

I doubt that's what he meant. He's merely pointing out that the left hates the fact that there are many conservative minorities who adhere to the Constitution. Justice Thomas, for example. The left goes particularly ballistic when minorities dare to be conservative.

I understand the reason for his thinking, but it changes nothing for me.

Race and sex should have no place in the decision. That's playing the left's despicable game.
