    I'm with you, Molly,

I've never liked Veggie Tales. I don't know David Cloud, but it sounds like I wouldn't like him either.

Veggie Tales seems to trivialize Bible stories. I remember one scene in Josh's Wall, where the Angel of the Lord is portrayed by an asparagus (in the Bible, this is an appearance which many believe to be a preincarnate appearance of Christ). Is that really no problem?

Besides, those O.T. stories often have some real meat (as opposed to vegetable matter) to them when we start studying them. They are not just adventures. Many times they are pointing to great N.T. truths about salvation, etc. I don't like to see them presented as merely vehicles for silly entertainment.

Now you Veggie defenders can throw your tomatoes at me.

    In Christ,

    Tim

Oh no, you don't like Veggie Tales either. Is there no end to the things that you don't like?

Okay...I'll bite. What is acceptable home entertainment of the video or dvd kind that has your stamp of approval for children? Or do you just find fault with everything under the sun? I mean seriously...is there anything that you can't find fault in? I mean y'all seem to be kind of persnickety if you ask me. ( I know, you didn't ask me.) [IMG]

    I really want to know.

I'm sorry, but we have that tape, and Do the Moo Shoo is Disco....hellooooo.</font>[/QUOTE]Just to clarify, those were David Clown's words. I just quoted him.

Yeah, nothing turns me on like a tomato and an asparagus gettin' down and funky.

You were expecting credibility? C'mon! It's David Cloud.

That's kind of like trying to learn about astro physics by watching the Coyote strap rockets to his back to catch the road runner.

I used to love that show.

Somehow, anytime I think of a boy and a talking dog, all I can think of is David (Davey?) Berkowitz.

"Daaavveyy, they're all plotting against you. You know what you have to do, don't you, Daaavey? You have to kill them, Daaavey."

"Daddy won't let us watch 'Davey and Goliath'. He says a talking dog is Satanic." - Todd Flanders, The Simpsons

As an Australian ... the worst things about them are the American accents .... (oh - I don't think they use the KJV either!) Fun stuff for young kids. Some are better than others, and not the ultimate in theology .. but certainly enough good stuff to be worth watching until you can spell 'theology' It's 'milk' stuff .. use it to lead to solid meat later [IMG]

Who says I don't like anything?

I like "Kingsley" videos for kids a lot better. They're fun, with songs, cartoons etc. But the Bible stories are acted out by real kids. I think they treat those things with more respect. Even kids can pick up on a respectful tone in regards to the Scripture IMHO.

    Hi all--

Did you hear about the possibility that Big Idea is going to come out with a VeggieTale in which an asparagus dies on the cross? And then a cucumber bows down before it and mumbles something that sounds sort of like, "Surely this was the Son of God."

And then a bunch of broccoli proclaims to some weeping carrots that the asparagus is risen. Then the asparagus appears with the wounds in his . . . well, now, finding a place to put the wounds might be a problem.

Why do you suppose Big Idea hasn't done this popular Bible story yet? Let's all petition them to do it soon. After all, this is just milk, and the children will certainly understand the difference between this fun entertainment and the real thing. If we get them to laugh, then they'll surely learn something, right?

Oh, but then I'm just an old stick in the mud, thinking we ought to take these Bible stories SERIOUSLY, of all things.

    In our Precious Saviour,

    Rebecca

I know, I (believe it or not) read the whole thing...including your remarks below your post. :D (although I have no idea who this David Clown is?)

I really shouldn't post on these threads. Why? Because the people who think this is serious stuff...probably have very little sense of humor about anything in life...and I can't help thinking that, that is just so sad. [IMG]

Right, but the way you quoted it made it look like they were my words.

    He's a whacko. You're not missing anything.

That describes David Cloud to a "T".

Here is the thing to do. You can let your child watch the vegitale tape, then when the cartoon stories stir an intrest in the story, you take the TEACHABLE MOMENT to open your Bible and show your child where the story came from. Vegitales are not a replacement for the Bible. A parent should not use it in replace of spending time teaching their child, but it can be used to get their interest instead of having to find a way to get them to sit still. It is a tool to help bring attention to Scripture, not replace it. It is also a cartoon with morals that promotes Christian beliefs instead of every cartoon on tv. That is a good thing.

I am reading with interest all this because my family and I really enjoy veggietales. I do think that it is ok to sound alarms and say "be careful", however I think there is an issue that some might be missing here. In no way should this replace the Bible in Christian homes. In Mr.Cloud's article he warned of "A BRIDGE TO THE WORLD". Bingo! It is, a bridge can be traveled on both ways. I teach in a public school in a lower socio-economic community. We have fairly high drug use and really high drinking. I have the statistics to back this up. My son (btw we homeschool) played on the high school basketball team this season. His team had some of the very best (nicest, cleanest, most well-behaved) kids in the school playing. I took them on multiple occasions places like Drake basketball games. As I was driving one night I wondered why these kids were better. They were not all Christians (3 of the 10 were), but instead of singing trashy songs on the hour plus drive, they sang veggietale songs! I was amazed. They all knew them. It didn't save them, but at least they weren't filling their minds with awful garbage and I even heard the Christian kids taking the opportunity to explain some spiritual truths. Was it a Billy Graham crusade? no. Was it better than Guns and Roses? yes. Veggietales as A BRIDGE TO THE WORLD? I can live with that.

Granted, NOTHING should replace the Bible in Christian homes. But enjoying Veggietales, Davey and Goliath, or those (imo) poor quality bible story cartoons on TBN need not be thought of as being in danger of replacing the Bible. Tobacco and alcohol probably replace the Bible in more homes than religious media products does.
