Vet says airline kicked his service dog, insulted him

One New Mexico disabled veteran said his service dog was kicked twice by airline employees this week and he was called a slur.

Jim Staneck said he reached his breaking point earlier this week. He's the founder of Paws and Stripes, which pairs disabled vets with service dogs.

In the course of 48 hours at Dulles Airport, he said his service dog, Sarge, was kicked twice by United Airlines works -- once at the ticket counter and then on a shuttle.

"(He) kicked her so hard on the rib cage, that she flew into my lap… He said he was afraid of dogs," Staneck said.

If true, the jerk's lucky he didn't get layed out on the floor. I don't think I could've turned my dog's other cheek.

Those who kicked the dog (if it really happened) should be charged with "cruelty to animals" and made to pay a huge fine at the very least. I don't understand why it keeps saying the AIRLINE did it when it was PEOPLE who work for the airline who did it. That is like saying that the RV park where I live is to blame if I commit a crime.

However, I do believe the airline is to blame for hiring such people. If it was me in that situation, I would sue those abusers and the airline. There is NO excuse for mistreating animals or verbally abusing a person. Being afraid something Like a dog) is NOT a good reason to kick or mistreat it. I am afraid of a few of God's creatures, but I don't go around harming them--unless they come into my home. That's my domain, and their domain is outside.

Maybe not, but you would be held responsible if your dog bites someone since you're expected to keep him/her under control. Of course, I believe any animal should have the right to defend itself just as I believe people should. NO one has the right to harm an animal or person who is not attacking them.

The chance of a highly trained service dog, bred and evaluated for their mild disposition, biting anyone except in defense of their master, is so close to zero it's not worth mentioning.

Mrs. Arbo and I were discussing this over dinner and came to the conclusion that if our pup was attacked in like manner as described, I'd be spending the night in jail for pummeling the guy.

Just a few thoughts:

1. Why the emphasis on this happening to a Vet? sounds like if the individual was only a civillian, it wouldnt have been a big deal.
2. This allegedly happened twice - evidently within a short time. Now that would be a bit unusual.
3. Is anybody curious to hear the employee(s) side of the story. Has the Airline made a statement.
4. Did the Vet take his dog to the vet - if so, was there any problem with it?

Mistreatment of a service animal is a big deal anytime and anyplace, regardless of disability of his owner or who he is. They are highly trained and could have to be retired as a result of abuse. Abuse could cause them to be tentative or afraid to do their job.

In this case, the fact that he's a veteran is pertinent because his disability, and his need for a service animal, is a result of his service.

Not arguing that point
But I still want to hear the other side of the story
B4 I decide on an opinion

So a disabled non-vet.......

Here is the thing - a story can get more sympathy based on the way it was written.

Would you you feel the same way if it was a non-disabled - war resister whose dog was kicked -

Documented animal abuse is wrong - period.

But as I said before, I want to hear the entire story. Until then it is an alleged incident.

If it was a service animal...

Absolutely!!

But , of course, they wouldn't have a service animal if they were not disabled, would they?

The point I was making was that a non-service dog should not be abused any more than a service dog.

Afterwords- it the penalty for abusing a service dog more than a non-service dog would make it a hate crime.

All I'm trying to say is that the story of the ALLEGED crime is playing on the sympathies of the readers

I wondered that, too. I know that (at least in some places) an assault on a police dog carries the same penalty as an assault on an officer.

The facts lend themselves to playing on the sympathies of the reader. There is nothing contrived here. All the facts are relevant.

You won't find anything but a service animal in an airport, restaurant, or shuttle bus.

The law makes an exception for them, non other. "Hate crimes" has no place in the discussion.
